HI
Much better off with a Yanmar. ..
Much better quality and reliability.
Main Dealer Volvo marine service is rather pathetic and leaves a lot to be desired especially regard to problem solving.
Had both makes.....I know

the risk with a yanmar is that in case of an electrical failure on the engine control unit the engine won’t run at all while if the volvo control unit fails you can still run the engine by starting it directly via a “bypass” switch/start button connected to the starter solenoid.

An interesting exchange. I'm not an engineer but have had experience of both Yanmar & Volvo marine propulsion units for around 40 years. I'm always impressed by the performance of such units when they are working. However I'd now always seek to avoid Yanmar engines; not on the basis of their design or manufacture (which is quite possibly very good) but rather on the disgraceful way that Yanmar treated its customers in not (as far as I could tell) issuing a recall notice or some form of advisory over the SD 50 sail drive dipstick (it was far too short - led to overfilling the sail drive causing the seals to fail) issue - covered at length elsewhere in the forum. I had frequent problems with sea water entering my boat's sail drive which cost me a great deal of money, wasted time and needless anxiety. A case study in how to lose customer loyalty in my view.

I too experienced problems with the MDI unit on a Volvo engine - the engine failing as I motored into Portsmouth harbour. A very poor performing Volvo dealer did not follow up on the Volvo factory recall; and by contrast an excellent Volvo dealer sorted it. There are good and bad service agents for all marques. I also learned how to bypass the MDI and start the engine with a big screwdriver so if it ever happens again I will be in a better place. Inspiration Marine were a big help in resolving the Volvo dealer issue by the way.
