Hi together,
it is my first post here, so please be nice :) i bought a hanse 345 around october, so far i enjoy the boat very much! a few weeks ago, i was sleeping in the front cabin and i heard the fresh water pump do a very short TICK, after about 2 hours, another TICK, then it stopped. now i randomly notice it doing very short TICKs every now and them. my first impression was that i might have some leak on the hoses/pipes but i cannot find any water in any part of the boat or bilges. any ideas if this short ticks can ONLY be linked to escape of water? could be something with electric installation/wires? the only place i couldn't really look was on the water heater (i cant find it ). on the heater itself, anyone know how long the heater is supposed to hold the water hot when it is power off? the question is coming from the fact that i have it turned off for about 24 hours and when i turn the tap on, using only hot water, it was VERY hot, to the point is burn my hand, is that normal? since i am wondering that the water pump tick might be electric glitch, and the hot water was VERY HOT after 24 hours, i start to think about any correlation and electric fault. does it makes sense or i am being a little paranoid? thanks!

If it is the freshwater pump ticking, it does not mean you have a leak. Most likely there is some backflow through the valves in the pump causing a loss of pressure. Once the pressure lowers enough the pump runs to top it up.
My water gets very hot from the engine, and is still hot enough for a shower the next day. It doesn't get quite as hot on the electric heater which must have a thermostat to limit it. My water heater is not original. I installed a new US made one after the original Italian one rusted out. That was at least 12 years ago and the replacement is still perfect. |

Have you looked for the heater under the port aft cabin berth? That is where it is on the 385.
I also get much hotter water from the engine (which runs at 90 degrees C) than the electric heater dispite the tank being fitted with a thermostat valve which I understand should mix cold water into the hot to stop delivery of super hot water to the taps. The water tank has a foam insulation jacket but I find that the water cools overnight - still just about warm enough for a shower but nothing like hot enough to burn. I do also have a constant drip from the pressure relief valve on the heater when the engine runs. I had this replaced with a different valve under warranty which temporarily resolved the issue but it has now returned. You will find this is a common issue and like others I have now installed a hose connected to a small water bottle in the engine compartment to collect the overflow rather than it going into the bilges. I wonder if this might be the cause of your water pump pulsing occasionally? Another thing to check is your stern shower. This should always be turned off at the tap when not in use - don't rely on the secondary trigger valve on the shower head itself. My own water pump does make very rare pulses but they seem random and I put it down to inevitable loss of pressure in the system over time. My bilges are totally dry and I don't believe I have any loss of water from the rest of the system. Edited by S&J - 07 June 2018 at 06:59 |

The system is always under pressure, when the pump is switched on. This means that there is always a minor flow back through the pump into the reservoir. As said above when the pressure falls below a certain limit the pump starts for a short period ( few seconds ).
For a sound sleep we always switch off the pump at the panel overnight.

thank you all! it makes sense.
during the winter this tick didn't happen (maybe it was cold enough to prevent the flow back) as it started when it started to get warmer. I didnt knew that that engine would make the boiler water hot. but again it makes sense, the day i found the very hot water on the tap was after motoring about 2,5 hours as there was no wind at all. when i moored and went down i notice that hot water, so was in fact 10 min max after i stop the engine (hot enough to burn the hands). i have a 345 with 2 berths and the big head/shower. so there is no berth on port side. i will try to look on the startboard just in case, but i think i will start to look backwards from the tap until i find it. thank you very much for the quick reply!

Perfect!
I was on the boat this WE and found the boiler. :) also, i found some little water in the compartment. i guess this is the escape valve overflow, or? any clever way to collect it? or just dry it out every few weeks? thanks!

On my 341, I have run a small plastic tube from the outlet of the over-pressure valve and run it out through a hole I drilled in the transom stern shower fitting.
Other people just run a tube into a small bottle.
