Hi All

We are planning an extended cruise around the med for the next few years in our 2014 415.  Now is the time to upgrade or fix any weak points on the boat.  
What has broken and why on your 415s and what preventative upgrades should we consider?

We have a 415 of the same vintage and have been sailing it in the Med from new. We've broken very little so far. A well made Bimini would be top of my list. Tecsew made ours and we had flexible Solbian panels fitted to the top. We hardly ever take it down and it produces enough power to allow us to live on the hook. Water is the limiting factor even though we have the extra tank. We've broken a few blocks so have spares. Extra fenders too, including a couple of big balls for the transom for stern-to. We have found we need a passerelle but often use the drop down transom for lower docks and use a pulley system to hoist it out of harms way at night and when we are off the boat. You will see pictures if you search the forum. We've broken a couple of bow thruster prop blades on lazy lines so now carry a spare set. You might upgrade the anchor, we have a Rocna which sits on the ordinal roller ok . Upgrading the gennaker fitting is required if you have a downwind sail and is again shown on the forum. A polarity reverser is also needed. You can make this yourself. Many marinas have reverse polarity and the 415 electrics refuse to play with it. I think we use ours for at least 20% of the time.

Thanks for the reply. We are just getting a TecSew Bimini now with solar fitted so great minds 👍
The downwind sail will be a furlstrom and I had seen that the fitting needs updating I’ll see if I can find the thread for yours.
What size rocna did you fit? The sizing guide makes seems to sit between the 20 and 25Kg

I’ll look into thruster spares and additional spare blocks.

Were getting ready to take ours offshore. Im doing the same thing myself. In terms of anchoring, im using 60m of 8mm chain and a 16kg Excel anchor, otherwise you'll have to adapt the fairlead to take a longer anchor shank.
 This weekend I reinforced the strips of wood that hold the mattress on the base in the forward cabin. They slowly start to bend and break off. I used L shaped brackets. I also added a strut to brace the end of the shelf in the aft cabin. That shelf was only good for holding air before.
Lots of other mods too but nothing much due to bad design or being breakage prone.

We fitted a 20kg Rocna to 60m of chain and 30m of rope. So far that has proved long enough.

Hi Mike,
Most of my issues have a direct relationship to me and not our 415 although we use it more like a caravan than hard sail it, as I race an ETchells to get my sailing pleasure. Some thoughts follow.

Only have water turned on at switch board when actually requiring use- empties the tank very quickly if either a tap is left on or in my case or the front filter was not pushed fully home after cleaning and lost a fair bit of water during a few hours of motoring in very strong wind conditions and choppy seas.

My wife likes to store clothing on a “just in case we need it basis etc” and pushed the odd cupboard a bit too hard to shut the doors against “too many” clothing items- resulting in the plastic push buttons break on inside where the 2 screws go. So carry a few more than those supplied with the boat.

Check your steering chain carefully - no problems with mine but recently spoke with a fellow Hanse owner who sailed his yacht from the Med back to Australia and his chain broke due to poor manufacture issue.

Check on Volvo Penta website using your sail drive and motor numbers to ensure your motor and sail drive have no outstanding recall,issues - local dealer told me the MDI unit that various people have complained about is a free replacement as an example- whatever, doesn’t hurt to check from time to time UNLESS you filled out all the fidilly warranty item cards at outset and sent in your details to Volvo AND keep them updated as that is only way they can contact you.

I have upgraded to 21kg Sarca Excell and found it brilliant.

Have found both anchor locker strut and the stern strut come loose so have locktighted both end screws on each.

We have 2 bedroom model 415 with large storage area on starboard side- have made up a fiberglass” sink to fit into the “drop in hole” and have picked considerably more storage area- if I knew how to attach a picture I would include a photo.

Check the screws on the main sail slides periodically as I found one on the deck once and eventually worked out where it belonged.

So all in all,nothing of real momentum from our boat
