Having just completed the ARC, thought we’d share our experience with the Jefa steering cable. Alesea was produced in 2015. In Las Palmas we checked the cables to discover both terminals which connect the cable to the chain had split. We replaced them both. Another 505, also in the ARC, also 2015 unfortunately experienced the same terminals failing mid Rally. Hard to believe that this is a coincidence, perhaps a fault in the system. Owners should check.

Congratulations on your Atlantic ctossing.
There was a factory recall to check and possibly replace the steering cables on my (December 2014 built) 385 during the 2015/16 winter. Mine was checked at Greifswald and the cables were replaced. I am not sure if this recall was related to a steering cable failure that (385) Interlude suffered crossing the Pacific in 2015. I imagine that the 575 has rather different steering, but perhaps this connection is common to all? Edited by S&J - 17 December 2018 at 22:01 |

one would think in this day and age a high tech synthetic cable with stainless thimbles each end to attach to the chain would be much better option than stainless cable. products like Dynex etc will flex much better to angles and tight bends and provide longer more trouble free solution.

We suffered a failure of our steering cables just after crossing the gulf stream on our way between Newport and Bermuda. I repaired this by installing dyneema to threaded eyes pulled from 2 turnbuckles (10mm). On the chain end, I tied anchor hitches backed by 1/2 hitches. I threaded a poly sheath for the portion that threaded across the quadrant to alleviate potential chafe. This setup held up extremely well from Bermuda to BVI without issue. I've just recently replaced this with new cables from PYI. I currently have new cables on order as spares, however, I may make up a dyneema replacement with spliced ends as a more permanent upgrade/ replacement.

We own several Hanse boats. On 345, 385, 415, 455 the cables are the same. After several failures we replace them every 2 years. The problem is that wires get rusted and then brake. Its not a matter of force since cables fail on 345 also. Connections also split but we didnt have any failure. I wasnt aware of any recall but I wouldnt feel safe to get the same wires. We install wires fabricated from local shop.

Hi Boerg,
I would also be really interested in details on Dyneema installation. (pictures) My cables frayed post transat on a 445 and the parts are slightly more difficult to obtain in the Caribbean. (And a lot more expensive) best regards Cedric |
