Unusual topic , however hopefully someone has "the knowledge". Am shipping my boat into Turkey in the near future and plan to sail Turkey and Greece. Current registration is UAE however there are issues for both shipping out of here and also insurance in the Med.
As I am non res I cannot use home country thus looking at various options of Malta, Gibraltar, BVI etc, but am yet to find a definitive answer. All experience and recommendations gratefully received. Thanks Rod

Hi Rod, our 445 is registered in Delaware. I am non-resident neither in EU nor in Turkey and sail mostly Aegean between Turkey and Greece. Delaware registration obtains you 5 years temporary import in Turkey and 18 months in Greece (provided owner is not EU national). All you have to do is exit Greece every 18 month, sail to Turkey, spend some time there and come back - you will get another 18 month.
Folks at Delaware register were super friendly when I called them up for help with registering the boat, you don't need an agent for that. The cost is around 150 USD or so.

Thanks Konstantin good info.
I have a UK passport which unless Brexit happens, means that stay in Greece is limited to ??. If Brexit does happen then am no longer EU citizen so Delaware appears to be a good option. Do you have the contact number for Delaware. Hope to catch up somewhere in the Aegean over the next few years. Arrive in Fethiye mid March. Rod

My understanding is UK passport holders will need a Schengen visa from 29 March if we exit the EU without a deal. This visa will need to be applied for in advance and can grant up to 90 day stay in any 180 day period.
This will affect me as I have previously spent periods of up to 4 months sailing in continental Europe, although I took the precaution of relocating from Greifswald to the Solent last year, with a view to explore Ireland and Scotland while things settle down. Hello Rod, Delaware register phone is +1 302 739 9916 and the website with all info is https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/contacts/
You can learn a lot about EU VAT with regard to sailing boats at https://www.noonsite.com/General/EuropeanUnion I've heard there is a one-month limit for temporary import of the VAT-not-paid boats if the owner or skipper is EU-national, but you have to check it. Especially when it comes to Greece, these guys are not always following EU regulations, and sometimes apply their own version of rules that are not in line with EU one's. All in all if I were you I'd wait brexit out in Turkey and then sail to Greece as non-EU owner for 18 months temporary import. Unless UK stays, of course. Or MPs vote for May's deal. Or it takes Greece forever to acknowledge UK's leaving EU. I plan to be sailing in Turkey/Greece Sept-Oct this year so yeah, will be great to catch up!

Hi Rod,
I had to give up my UAE registration on leaving but managed to get an SSR because we have a UK address. US is an option but I think there is a catch in the EU VAT rules that says if the boat is owned by an EU national it might still be subject to VAT even if its Third country flagged, you will have to check this out as its a bit third hand, and you might get round it by forming a shell company in the US that owns the boat. Of course this will not be an issue if we leave the EU and get treated as a third country (please no Brexit arguments im just discussing registration potentials). However, you could apply for a turkish registration, we have a friend who looked into it and it wasn't that expensive for a foreigner, more expensive for a Turk. Barbaros at Finike marina should be able to help you with this. Mark

Hi Rod, I would look for a temporary solution until the outcome in SB is clearer. You can decide later whether you want to import it into a EU member state ( paying the VAT ) or stay outside. I was skippering a Yacht with Jersey registration 2 years ago. When wie arrived in Calvi Korsika, we had visits from Police, Border Guard, Finance and some other government agencies I do not even recall the name. As I was the only French speaker in the crew the procedures took me over 4 hours in total. Jersey flag also means that you have to leave the EU every 18 months for a short period. Good Luck |
