My Panda 10000i has 220 hours and has been reliable so far.
Have done all routine maintenance, and other than a failed salt water pump I’ve had no issues. As to spares I carrry fuel and oil filters, and a spare salt water pump, but I’m thinking I need to build out a more compete spare kit. I’m curious what other folks are carrying. Relays? Various sending units? Thermostat? What fails that’s serviceable in the field? |

Kipwrite,
We have the same unit of HOPE and we now have 1120hrs on it. Spares we keep are - Fan belt -replaced one Air filter material -replaced about 4 times Primary fuel filter cartridges - replaced each 200 hours Fuel filter (small inline unit) - replaced twice Oil filter -replace each 200 hours (each second oil change) Raw water pump impellers - replace about each 200 hours. We also have needed a complete spare Johnson raw water pump - because they are a bad design which after around 200 hours leak sea water from around the shaft. We also carry a seal kit for the same Johnson pump. The cast aluminium exhaust mixer ( where the seawater is injected to cool the exhaust) corroded through and leaked sea water. Had this welded initially but are currently sourcing a replacement. Hot exhaust gas and cast aluminium don't go well together so I assume this problem will revisit us in another 1,000 hours or less. We just had a compressor test done and both cylinders where very good. We tend to make sure the generator is well loaded whilst running. |

Wayne's list is about what we carry, although we have far less hours on the generator. Same unit (8kw 10000i) FP sells spares kits but it means paying twice as much for things because there is a panda bear on the outside of the plastic box they come in :-) A couple of thoughts: 1. I put a c-strainer on the hull outside the thru-hull as seaweed, eel grass and plastic bags sucked into the intake can burn out the impeller pretty easily. 2. I was not happy with the way the generator was mounted as changing the impeller (done once so far) requires working at a 90 degree angle and using a mirror to see things. It replaced easy enough, but all they had to do was turn the generator box the other way and maintenance/repair would be a lot easier. FWIW

yes on the raw water pump! I carry a full rebuild kit for it, including a new shaft, and I have a complete spare pump ready to go in. When I pull the old pump out, I’ll rebuild it. The shaft corrodes and makes the seals leak.
It’s a well known problem. |
