I have an 2017 415 which is kept on a swinging mooring in NZ and as we anchored frequently I think we would benefit from having a double bow roller arrangement. The double bow roller on the latest 418 and other ‘8’ series models also looks more substantial for flying a gennaker/code zero. Has anybody retrofitted the new hanse factory bow roller and if so were there any issues. Hanse say it ‘should’ fit but the forestay may need adjustment.
Note that I am not proposing to leave the anchor on the bow when moored but think the double roller would assist in mounting the anchor.
I’d also be keen to hear what ‘8’ series owners think of the latest bow roller design in practice. Thanks Steve |

Hi,
I am a bit uncertain what up you are trying to achieve in changing to the 418 double bow roller? Why make the change if you do not intend keeping the anchor on the roller when moored? We have had the 418 for about 12 months, my thoughts are that the arrangement is OK if you are using as intended. I assume that this means the Delta anchor on one roller and occasionally pick up a mooring on the other. If I was changing the entire unit I would, however, want to improve a couple of things. Firstly I would move the port roller (the one with the anchor) forward a bit to give more options for larger or better cruising anchors. I would also move the starboard roller back a bit so that a mooring line on that roller is less likely to foul on the anchor. I understand that some owners are running the mooring line under this roller, to help keep clear of the anchor. Regards Gordon

I am going to have to do some repair work to the existing bow roller if we keep it as, like others, we badly bent the Gennaker attachment loop the first time we flew the Gennaker (no more than 15kts of wind). I will also be getting a Code 0 at some time. The idea of having twin rollers was to assist in removing/installing the anchor (Excel) at the mooring, be better for running the anchor chain snubber when at anchor and at the same time hopefully getting a stronger Code 0/ Gennaker tack point. I agree with your ideas on the ‘ideal’ twin roller arrangement and if I end up having a custom fitting made would design something along those lines. The 418 twin roller would however probably work out the cheaper option. Steve |

Hi Steve,
We have our 415 in Gulf Harbour. I modified the gennaker / code 0 attachment point, in combination with a bob stay. Looks very nice and all for the cost of about $80 in stainless. Can send you a pic if you like? Jeremy

Hi Steve, My 418 was supplied with a single bowroller which was pretty flimsy but as I had seen the twin bowroller on the 2 418's I viewed before signing up I was pretty disappointed with the single one. I must give the Dealer full marks as they agreed to retrofit the double roller unit I was expecting to see. It was a mission to get the bolts off and the boatbuilder was stretched out on the job but they did get it off and the new one on. I am really happy with the double roller setup as it is so much stronger and the Zero can tie straight on without any bob stay. Hugh

Thanks for the feedback Hugh. My situation may be a little different having a 415 but just a couple of additional questions please.
1. Did they have to change the forestay length when changing to the double roller? The tack fitting looks slightly higher on the double roller. 2. Did they have to add new backing plates under the bow in front of the anchor locker or was it fitted already to suit a double roller (being a 418)? Steve |

Hi Steve, Sorry I don't know about the forestay length as the dealer did it all, but I am concerned now, thanks, as to whether the mast rake has been altered. I know its performance is not very good compared with a 415 and Johcow's 418. The double roller had a welded plate down the outside of the bow which looks as though there are certainly no strength issues. I modified the bowroller on the 430 I had, so it hinged and extended. Great invention. Hugh
