I am used to have the bilge pump connected even if the main switch is off. In my 2007/400 the automatic bilge pump is only operational when the main switch is on.
Is there anybody on this forum that has rebuilt the wiring for the bilge pump making it ready for action anytime also when the boat is moored/unmanned?

I have a spot ligth over the galley that is operational also when the main switch is off, so using the same power supply may solve my challenge, but I am unsure if the wiring has the sufficient size for running the bilge pump for a long period?

Hei Bergen - provided you’ve performed effective maintenance and taken all reasonable precautions when leaving the boat unattended I wouldn’t be too worried about the issue.

While it makes sense to ensure the bilge pump will function in any circumstance I wouldn’t be concerned about the wiring so much as the poor positioning and capacity of the pump.  By the time water reaches that level you’d already have a few hundred litres onboard; there’s plenty of posts on this forum about how to remove water hidden below the boards and inside the stringers themselves.  Many people have placed a more powerful pump in more realistic sites such as by the hull valve for the galley drain.

If you’re still concerned then I’d also check you had the electrical generation and battery capacity to run a pump for a long period.  If I was leaving mine on a mooring I’d certainly want a decent solar system. That way you needn’t be concerned about leaving your electrical system as is with everything off except the bilge pump, using your battery monitor/multimeter to check all is ok.

Hi Ratbasher

In general. I don`t worry for the boat starting leaking. But it is a fact that the boat is left unmanned in the harbour for 99% of the time. By this reason i would like to have the bilge pump operational in case of of a potential leakage.

Actually, I have already saved on of my previous boats from damage in the past by having the bilge pump ready for operation in the dock. I had an accident when lifted the boat off the water for underwater cleaning, and discovered the lifting strap hanging under the saildrive, but apparently no damage happened, I checked the bilge after the boat was back on the water,  and the bilge was dry. However, when I came back to the boat two days later, I noticed the bilge pump running and there was water all over in the bilges rooms. It was later discovered that the saildrive foundation was partly loosened from the hull, and water was soaking slowly (about 10 l/hr) into the boat. Even if there was a lot of water in the bilges, no damage was done on any technical equipment or furniture.

This experience is the reason for me seeking for solutions for changing the wiring to the bilge pump. But, yes, adding another pump with automatic start near the galley valve with direct wiring to the batteries is another possible solution for me.
