No.. you would have to talk to the folks at B&G or someone who uses it for real racing. They have *LOTS* of calibration capability, however, not found on other systems (ex: As wind speed rises, they change various calculations based upon variables). I'm old-school, however, so the basic wind, depth and speed figures were always fine for me. That said, I'm not doing the Volvo around the world race. Sorry. All I know is that its a pretty dependent system. wind and boat speed and CPU and compass and other devices are all used at the same time for the same, now derived, piece of data. FWIW |

Thanks. My Garmin denotes dangerous AIS targets solid red and safe ones with a green outline. On the B&G with a moving cockpit (and not great eye sight!) its not immediately obvious to me which targets are safe / dangerous just by the black line being bold or not (which seems to be B&G's method for illustration). Since I live in Chandlers Ford maybe I should pop along and show the B&G coders the Garmin manual and spur them on ;-) I'd seen the max and average speed in the trip log but assumed these to be SOG?

One of the functions that was never discussed was the anchor alarm which was unsatisfying with Zeus 2. How about the Zeus 3? I remember the Simrad CX series where you could optically define a red circle around our yacht wherein she could move at anchor. This is something realistic and vital in the life of a common cruising sailor, isn't it. I also hated with Zeus 2 that these alarm settings where hidden behind the same password you use to change other settings (system a.s.o). (And this password stayed open as long as you didn't switch off the plotter).

Zeus v2, v3 and Vulcan all have identical software.
The anchor alarm works by defining a distance from the current location which seems similar to the radius/circle yourdescribe, although it's not shown on the chart. Never had an expectation of needing security to set things like alarms, and would find this frustrating on the depth alarm which I change from 3.5 to 5m frequently depending on where I am sailing.... I do wish the alarm would automatically switch off once back on deep water though. I need to talk to my crew about switching chart orientation to heading up! My preference is for north up. 😂 @ EmBer, you are correct that max and average speed for the trip are derived from SOG. |

I use the B&G Zeus anchor alarm all the time. Its a check box and a distance parameter (say 200 feet) but it works. I think a lot of the usability issues with Zeus software would be removed if they gave the owner some "I'd like it this way" or "my personal menu" capability. Right now you have to follow their menu trees and their view of what needs quick access and what does not. I'm more than willing to admit that others may not want what I want for quick access, but that doesn't mean its wrong. |
