Yesterday the mechanic found out, that we had water in the  gearbox.  He told us that it is common that the seal of the propellor shaft has to be changed after 3 years. It seems to me that this is a very short time.
The oil was white with seawater and he changed the seal (in german Simmering)
Is this really a common problem?

Greetings from Croatia

As I have learned this is because of too much oil. The simmering gets blown out / destroyed.

Mine is fine after 11 years. Yanmar.
Never any such problems on my previous Volvo either.

Unfortunately, you might have changed the seal and soon after water  gets in due to a fishing line or something else caught along the way in the prop shaft.
Ther's no way to avoid it. Cry
Anyway, they told me that if you put the right oil the water will separate and remain in the low portion of the saildrive still ensuring a correct lubrication.

I'm guessing that you have the Volvo D1-30 with the 130S saildrive?  I think that changing this seal every 3 years is not routine.

My boat is now 5 years old and gearbox oil has been replaced each year and every time I throw away what looks like clean, new oil.  I am lifting out for the winter next week and I'll be changing the oil again, but I wonder if this is something that could be done every alternate year?  I do about 100 engine hours a year.

Incidentally, the sterndrive uses the same oil as the engine.

I change the oil when the boat is ashore as this is much easier than trying to do it in the water.  However, unlike the Yanmar fitted to the 388, it is possible to extract the oil from inside the boat while afloat using a pump.  I had this done in Sweden for the first 50Nm service and watched to see how much oil they got out.

Hello Stuart,

yes I have a Volvo d1 30 and a 130s saildrive. Our boat is of 2016. I have learned now that I check the oil regularly. When  it gets white spots, the simmering has to be renewed. Boatneighbors told me that it had happened to a brand new Volvo. It seems as if there was a series of weak simmerings used by Volvo.  In the moment we are back in the water and enjoy the nice weather here.

Greetings Axel

I have Volvo D1-30 & SD 130S since 2011.
The seals & simmering are stil the original ones.
No problem so far;
But I carry a spare kit of seals.  just in case a fisching line breaks it.

If you vent your saildrive gear case you will eliminate any differential pressure caused inside the box as its cools, its that pressure that draws sea water in past the seals.

A hose tail with hose lead high in the engine bay and small breather on top vents the gear case. See my other posts or use search function for many topics on this subject.

in case you need to replace the seals, search my site for saildrive seal and you’ll find picture on how I replaced mine and also fixed the wearings on the shaft.
