To add from my own experience. On my previous Hanse - a 400e - I had a Sleipner tunnel thruster fitted by Osmotech at Hamble Point. The tunnel had "eyebrows" shaped around the tunnel entrance to reduce the drag caused by the apertures.

A few years ago the sailing journalist Tom Cunliffe took my boat (Providence) out and produced a few videos. He was impressed by the thruster - and not least the ability to control the thruster remotely - eg from the pontoon. If you Google "Tom Cunliffe bow thrusters" you should find the articles and videos.

Osmotech's workmanship was excellent; they also provided great back up when the remote control failed and I was circumnavigating the British Isles. I subsequently had Osmotech fit retractable bow and stern thrusters to my current Hanse 455.

I know purists will say that thrusters are unnecessary and they may well be right if berthing manoeuvres a practiced frequently. I do not. This summer the ability to glide sideways into a seemingly impossibly tight spot on a river pontoon with a strong tide running - complete with an "audience" on the pontoon expecting it to all go horribly wrong - did elicit a degree of disbelief in the crew. There were just a few centimetres gap between the boats.

Richard,

spot on!

When you have the silent exturn the curious "Pontoon Admirals" will not immediately notice the side thruster due to the windnoise

Yes, I have seen the "eyebrows" on many bow thrusters, I suppose to divert the flow of water and the ship to slide better.
Regarding the remote control, I have it in the anchor motor, I suppose it will be something similar.
I guess the bow thruster will subtract 0.2 or 0.3 kn, from the speed of the boat, but the comfort and tranquility when maneuvering in narrow places is worth it. Especially not to hit the ship.
Thank you.

Hi Davisico

The installers of the tunnel thruster - Osmotech - said that a well shaped "brow" would ensure there was very little impact on the boat's performance. The H400e was certainly quick and usually outpaced similar (and sometimes much larger) craft with ease. Although I had changed the self tacking jib for a large Genoa....

The Sleipner remote control also operated the anchor which meant that I could carry out this action from the cockpit if necessary.

I don't think the tunnel weakened the hull; Osmotech glassed in a very substantial thruster tube.

Good luck with your own installation!

Richard
