Hi Roger,
Thanks for sharing your experience. Hadn't thought about the calorifier point. The boiler is indeed kind of small so might be good opportunity to replace it for a larger one. Finding one that fits might be a challenge though. An alternative might be this idea, http://twoatsea.com/i-took-a-shower/, seems like that could be a really interesting way to go. Have you consider this approach? What matrix fans did you use? Wonder if there are others that might be more quite since I am kind of sensitive to noise. Did you consider one for in the bathroom? why? Why not? would be nice for drying foul water gear With respect to fluid in the system, what do you use? Antifreeze? Water? Do you have an expansion tank? What made the wiring labor intensive? Any tips/tricks? Any pictures you can share? Harold S/V Ventus Hanse 415, #314 |

Hi Harold
The heat exchanger in the link you gave looks good. I think this could be used as well as the normal calorifier with either a Y valve arrangement in the hot water circuit or maybe a non return valve. This would probably be cheaper (and simpler to install) than a complete replacement 2 coil calorifier, and also it gives 'instant' (after 3 minutes) hot water. One thing the article doesn't mention, though, is the achievable flow rate. My experience with small electric showers is that you need 7KWs to give a good flow rate. I wonder if the D5 (5KW) is really big enough? The matrix fans were of several different makes around the 1 to 2 KW size found on eBay. The total heat load of the 4 is about 5.5KW. Their main attraction was price! I didn't install a fan in the heads/shower compartment as it would have been difficult - space and access there is limited. It would be good to have direct heat in there but, to be honest, we haven't really missed it. The fluid is antifreeze, to avoid draining in the winter. It also contains inhibitor which is recommended. You definitely need an expansion/header tank. Mine came with the heater 'kit' and is 5 litres or so. It needs to be at the highest point in the system; I put mine in the starboard aft wardrobe. There was no particular problem with the wiring. It just takes time to do a neat job (x4). I haven't got any pictures currently but could take a few next time I'm on the boat (if you're serious about going hydronic?).

Hi Roger:
Yes pretty serious about going for hydronic system. Your point on the flow rate in combination with the D5 is a good one. If I do the back-of-envelope calculations, it suggests you can expect max flow rate of about 3.5 liter/minute if you need raise the temperature 20C (say from 15 to 35C). That is not a lot of water but could probably work. Alternative would be slightly larger hydronic heater. I was actually thinking of plumbing the heat exchanger after the calorifier. Haven't completely thought through if that is a good idea though. Where did you mount the martix fans? Any pictures highly appreciated. No rush though

Hi Harold
Regarding flow rate - when I was planning my heating the next size hydronic boiler after the D5 was the 10KW version you first mentioned. I thought that was too large for my needs - Eberspacher heaters last longer between services if they are run flat out continuously, rather than cycling at low heat - but would work for an instantaneous water heater. Is there a max heat input specified for the heat exchanger? If you send me a PM with your email address we can carry on this conversation direct. I'll take some photos in the next week or so.
