Were any 345s built or sold without an autopilot. I ask because a friend has one and he is convinced it has no ap?
If I lift the floor I should see a ram if fitted?
Any help much appreciated as I am only a meagre baby 301 owner using a Tiller pilot... Thanks in advance Steve |

Sherlock Holmes would know, that most autopilots consists of a gizmo to move the rudder, normally mounted on the rudder quadrant, or on the wheel/steering arm. A control-box/computer should be present in a dry area, with wires to an electronic compass, and to an instrument in the cockpit to alter the course, and a rudder-feeler. (A tiller pilot is more simple though, but it is very visible). Try to look around the cockpit, and check if there is an instrument where it is possible to change course like +/- 10 degrees and -+/- 1 degree - and if not.....................no autopilot there. A lot of Hanses were sold with no autopilot.

My Hanse 345 do not have an autopilot... quote to get it installed is around 4000 GBP in UK. in my case, the Zeus is old enough and the Triton as well. so the I need a new Triton2 or newer (or an autopilot control) to make it work. Of course, there is no direct drive not chain link... so that is why the cost is about 4k to get it professionally installed in UK. It is the absolute next thing in my list to get it sorted. Luis

The most economical solution is a wheel pilot. If you can find an old model (or used?) with rate or "gyro" compass, it is affordable. The new top model in the picture is £1500 on eBay. It is easy to install.

My 348 was delivered with a faulty autopilot. A part was replaced by the dealer and it is now operational.

For any serious passages you really want an autopilot that drives the quadrant rather than the wheelpilot.
In my experience the wheelpilot is probably only suitable for boats up to 10m and may be marginal for a 345/348. They also create a fair bit of friction/drag even when the clutch is disengaged. The B&G/Jefa pilot may seem expensive but I think it is worth the money.
