Hi Hansers — we have a 350 Hanse with a Jefa / Simrad auto-helm system fitted. We’ve never had any problems although this year it’s not working. The Simrad displays works fine and shows rudder position etc but when we try and turn it to auto-helm, it fails with the message “rudder response failure”.

We’re hoping to set sail to the Scillys next week so would love to get it fixed before then.

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips for how we go about troubleshooting / fixing it?

As always, any help much appreciated.

My first impression is that the drive unit is not working properly.  Could be wiring or the unit itself. Check both. You should be getting 12 volts at the drive when you enter a turn command at the controller.  You should also check voltage at the controller to be sure it’s OK. If no voltage at the drive, it may be an in-line fuse or broken wire.  If voltage is good at both locations, the the drive motor is suspect. Can you hear it spinning?? If so, then it’s a problem with the internal gears. If no spin, then you probably need a new motor. Good Luck.

I can remember getting that response when we had forgotten to turn on the auto helm at the switch panel. The simrad unit was getting power from the NMEA 2K network but the drive was not! So yes maybe a bad connection or fuse in the supply as Arcadia suggests.

Same sh*t this year. Auto helm works for a few minutes, then says “rudder response failure” and off. Voltage is OK.

likely you have water damage in the drive, check lipseal on main drive shaft is showing signs of rust? the lipseal is EPDM over steel and after a while the seal gets damaged and rusts. The message you are getting typically a sign the drive is using more current to try to operate and as a result is sending error msg.

Jefa offer rebuild service.
