I have a 2016 455. From very early on I had issues with electrolysis corrosion around the st/st screws on the forward plate of both pedestals. This was reported under warranty and the dealer investigated (checked earthing from rudder gear), repainted the panels and re-fitted the screws with insulated paste. Problem stayed away for about a season (or just out of warranty...) but is now a continuing issue. Anyone else have this problem and any suggestions for permanent solution?

Hi NIck, I own a 445 which has pretty much the same steering system. Do you have any photos you can share?

Cheers.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

The steering pedestal on the 455 (See photo) is different from the early 445 although I think they may have adopted the new pedestal on the last few 445's. The corrosion is taking place around the st/st screws on the plate at the front of the pedestal. Stupidly I didn't take any photos of the corrosion before I left the boat - this photo was taken before the problem had re-occurred...

Any advice much appreciated.

BTW I should have more correctly used the term "Galvanic Corrosion" but I expect everyone worked out what I mean....

Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick,

Yes the pedestal top is quite different; think the rest is the same. We have a small problem at the pedestal bottom so wondered if you were referring to the same problem. I don't believe ours is galvanic, just corrosion creeping under the powder coating.

Cheers.

I had similar problems with both pedestals on my 400 causing the white powdercoat to bubble and blister. In my case i had an earth bonding wire fitted to my rudder, this bonding wire along with one on the keel, one from diesel tank and AC earth were all connected to a hull mounted zinc anode.

Not only did i have issues with pedestals bubbling but also areas of anitfoul blowing off the keel.

After consultation with Jefa who manufacture both the rudders and steering pedestals and a local electrical/electrolysis expert i disconnected both rudder and keel bonding wires. The issues stopped immediately. The contact at Jefa said they disagree with Hanse bonding of the rudder and that the shaft in isolation in synthetic bearings connected with draglink to autopilot by synthetic bushes the rudder was best left isolated not bonded.

Bottom line its was considered that action of the hull anode and or leakage from AC earth was sending very small charge to rudder shaft that in-turn is connected to steering pedestals. Rudder shaft and steering pedestals are aluminum, more noble than the hull anode.

Proof is in the pudding so to speak, once disconnected no further issues with pedestals or keeping anitfoul on the keel.

hey Stephen
Same by us.
But we disconnect the bonding of the rudder from the first day we take over our 545 2010.
After 5-6 years the painting start to bubble off. Its go slow but every year a little bit more.
IMO a problem of coating (primer)of the allu Pedestals.
We left the bonding on the rudder ,upper part iron no problem, lower part is made of recup lead with a lot of dirt inside and this give problems with blowing off antifouling.

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated. I was planing on taking the pedestal plates off this winter and getting them re-coated. Think I might hold fire, touch up the blistered paint and try disconnecting the earth wire to the rudder - see if it solves it. Sounds logical.

I am assuming its the earth wire on the top of the rudder shaft although "wild and west" reply sort of implies there is another one I don't know about. Can you help on this?

Thanks again

Nick

“We left the bonding on the rudder “ must be “we left the bonding on the keel “

Nick
On the original electric wiring diagram I have there’s only one on the top of the rudder.
The org bonding is between keel-fueltank- both watertanks-rudder and the zinc anode on the hull, and in our case the frames of the generator and charger-inverter Quattro Victron.
