Another solution is to use a dc/dc battery charger between the engine battery and the house battery.

We have a Redarc BCDC1225D and in less than 30 minutes of engine running can recharge our 160Ah AGM house battery from 80% to 100%.

We also have a small solar set up to keep the batteries popped up while on a mooring and the boat is unoccupied. But it is worth noting that solar and engine driven charging don't play together nicely owing to the different characteristics of engine driven charging and solar MPPT regulators - big topic and not well understood by many.

Battery to battery DC/DC charger somewhat easier to self install than an Alternator to Battery charger but to each his (or her) own!

If you have a Yanmar 3JH4 or 4JH4 the cheapest way to convert to serpentine is to buy spares from the newer xJH5 model.

The following parts are needed:

1 pcs PULLEY, CRANK 6PK Partnr.: 129271-21660

3 pcs BOLT, M10X 20 PLATED Partnr.: 26106-100202

3 pcs WASHER, 10 Partnr.: 22137-100000

1 pcs BELT, ALTERNATOR 6PK Partnr.: 129271-77680

1 pcs PULLEY, PUMP 6PK Partnr.: 129271-42350

4 pcs BOLT M 6X 12 PLATED Partnr.: 26106-060122

1 pcs BOLT, IDLER BELT Partnr.: 129271-77651

1 pcs IDLER ASSY, BELT Partnr.: 129271-77660

1 pcs NUT, M16 Partnr.: 26716-160002

If you want it perfect you also need new spacers for the belt cover. But adding 3 washers on each spacer bolt works fine.

2 st BOLT,BELT COVER Partnr.: 129271-77411

1 st BOLT, BELT COVER Partnr.: 129271-77421

The cost (inc new spacers) was 140 excl VAT.

You also need an alternator with a 6PK pulley on the alternator with the right offset. I selected a 55mm giving me a 1:2,4 ratio, alternator 6000 Rpm at 2500 engine rpm. Yanmars new stock alternator is a Valio 120A with a price 385€ excl VAT.
