Hello,

can anybody comment about the benefits  of the H5000 autopilot vs. the NAIS3 autopilot, especially in bluewater/ocean conditions? do i understand correctly that you can upgrade from NAIS3 by purchasing one H5000 CPU, and that's it?

Does anybody had experienced any failure of the autopilot unit itself - not sensors nor actuators? i may consider keeping the NAIS3 as a backup...

You need to buy the H5000 autopilot and the H5000 CPU units.  You may also need to upgrade the motion sensor / compass unit.  So it is a fairly expensive update.

The H5000 is a considerably more complex unit than the NAIS3.  It is aimed primarily at racers.   It takes quite a long time to learn how to use it and then to tune all the parameters.   We had one on our 505.

We haven't used the NAIS3 but had a similar earlier model autopilot on a Hanse 370.   It worked very well.   I performed well in point and go or the sail to wind angles modes.   Not much to tune but then you didn't have to.

And the H5000 really did need tuning.   We found it often over sensitive to waves and it over-steered.  This was especially so for waves coming from around 150 apparent.  The steering added to the roll of the waves.   Maybe we just hadn't fully got to grips with the tuning even though I spent quite a bit of time at it and got a B&G engineer onboard.

So on my new boat I will go with the NAIS3.  But if you want to race lots and really fine tune everything on the boat then go for the H5000.

Thank you Colin, your experience is very valuable to me. I am not racing at all, and it's impossible to evaluate the differences in the real world from the marketing material...

I have installed a NAC-3  which is same as NAIS3, and I can only say it is awesome. Better than any other autopilot computer I have used, especially in tough conditions. Combined with Precision9 Heading compass.
