Thanks a lot for all the good advices - highly appreciated. Looks that there are quite some options to store the life raft in one of the lockers. So I'll skip the container option and go for a valise packed one. And I'll select one with a low width, so that it can be stored in the cockpit bank locker as well if required. So I can select and order a life raft now, so that it is available in time for the hand-over of the boat.

Moin Frank, und herzlichen Glückwunsch zum neuen Boot!
For what it is good for, I wouldn’t discard the pushpit option. The manoeuvring space you‘d give up is neglectable. Your outboard motor could go to the other side (though I admit that I have an electric torqeedo, which I keep down below inside), and there will still be space for other safety gear you may wish to mount either port or starboard. I am very happy with my 6px raft container on the port side (see pic below). The space in the starboard locker is precious, and you my want to safe it for other stuff like hoses, ropes etc. There is also the safety aspect, because the raft can be deployed from the pushpit even in difficult conditions very easily.
Best regards und eine gelungene Übergabe
Gunnar

Gunnar,

I'm glad to see at least one canister raft as that is what I have bought but not installed yet!.  I am planning to mount it in the same location.  Do you have any photos of how it is attached to the pushpit?  Mine came with threaded sockets on the raft frame and I'm looking for the best mounting system as it is close to 50kg

Regards,

David

 David,
I have a cradle that came with 2 mounting clamps (see black arrows). It was pretty easy to install. Additionally I tied the cradle to the pushpit with some 3mm rope (red arrow) at one „intersection“.  I am afraid that the picture attached doesn‘t show it too well, but I hope you get the idea. Won‘t get back to my boat anytime soon due to lockdown :-(

Pushpit mounting is certainly the most convenient but if your 418 is anything like my 400 then the stanchion mountings will definitely require substantial reinforcement.

The effects on stability of such a large undesigned-for mass fairly high up right aft must also be considered, particularly if you already have other high-up weight like a roller main as these are not usually considered in the Stability Curves.  However, given that our risk-assessments should take account of the actual patterns of use then if you're never going to sail in sea-states where stability is of concern then this may not be an issue.  After a pretty interesting knock-down in the Channel one year, I'm perhaps more wary than most....

I do like the old dictum that 'the best life raft is always your own boat'.
