Today the rudder was dropped. It turned out that the bearings are fine. The outer ring of the lower bearings however was found loose/not attached to the GRP tube. It seems that Hanse did a very poor install, only using sika at three points, each point around 2 cm long, to secure the lower bearing outer ring to the GRP tube. After 5 years that came undone...
Apart from the cost of getting the lift to raise the boat so that the rudder could be dropped there are no expensive parts to be ordered, which is a relief. Which product would you recommend to fix the lower bearing to the GRP tube?

Jan Faurschou at Jefa just wrote me that Sika 221 should be used to glue the bearing back in. So that will conclude taking care of the rudder issue. I am very grateful for the really very quick and excellent service from Jefa.

Thank you ohthetrees. We were supposed to launch yesterday but we were having issues getting all the TruDesign seacocks to Malta in time. So one more week...

good morning,
Going to tackle the service as recommended for every 3 years in my boat next week albeit it is the first time since boat launch in 2014 and as I could not find any detail comment on the subject in the various topics any input you could provide would help me. 1 Did you do the removal of the rudder totally and if so was it easy like it seems in the Jefa maintenance video 2 was there any corrosion build up 3 what did you use to clean the revolving “ball” and the internal bearing surface. 4 what type of grease did you use? I am thinking of lanolin as I couldn’t track down the grease recommended in a note to their video. 5 did you re do the sicca join where the shaft enters the rudder 6 how long for removal Thanks Peter

Hi, I replaced both upper and lower bearing at anchor.
1) Very easy to drop anchor as long as you have sufficient room below the boat to drop the rudder. 10 minute job to drop rudder. 2) no corrosion, but also, all the bearing parts are non metallic. Appears mostly composite and ceramic. 3)Sponge, soap. Easy to clean. 4) Superlube synthetic grease 5) No 6) An hour to replace top and bottom bearings, done in the water at anchor.

Hi Peter,
Ohthetrees' answers are exactly the same as my experience. Very easy. Good luck!
