I am luckily well ahead with my planned maintenance this year.

Bluenote has been relaunched with all the important through hills and seacocks replaced, saildrive flap faired, rudder bearings replaced and hull stripped and refinished below the water line.
Our planned cruising is unlikely to start until May so I thought I would have a go at sprucing up the forecabin.

Over the years the ply lining to the forecabin sides has been subjected to leaks and condensation and this has made the laquer or wood discolour.

The short term option was to strip the laquer treat the darkened wood with phosphoric acid and respray the laquer.

This is made easier by removing the shelves. These are fixed with brown Sika only on their top edge. They are also held in place at the aft end by two screws in a batten through into the locker sides.

The front ends are a problem as they are fastened with screws through the front bulkhead trim that sits up against the anchor locker and is heavily sika flexed in place.
The only solution I found was brute force and they came out of the shelf end grain with minimal damage. This enables the shelf to be removed so it can be varnished at home. More importantly so the unprotected end grain can be sealed along its entire length. Sadly this was a minor cost saving in the factory! I use pva glue and finish with a couple of coats of varnish. This will stop damp and condensation from causing any further discolouring of the shelf.
I then tackled the screws by pulling the heads of them completely through the front bulkhead trim with a good set of pincers.

Having removed the shelves you then have the option of replacing the ply trim on the hull sides or refurbishing it.
Replacing it would be relatively easy as it is only sikaflexed in place. Trying to get it out in one piece would be impossible so I have made a cardboard template.

I decided that I don't have sufficient time to do the replacement this spring so have carefully scraped all the old laquer off and relaquered with an industrial laquer supplied in large spray cans by Toolstation.

I have only done this below the shelf line as I have decided to spray white gloss above the shelf line to add a bit more light to the forecabin especially with led ribbons on the inside of each shelf upright.
I will post a few pictures once I have things back in place.

It would be nice to actually get near our yacht because of lockdowns, so well done to you for using your time wisely.

Whilst you are working on the fore-cabin, if you can, I think you would find it beneficial to insulate the underneath of the bed base with insulation foam.  I have done all the areas of all of the beds that I can reach, as well as the hatches.  I even managed to get a layer over the water tank. It certainly reduces condensation underneath the matresses.

I used

https://www.jewson.co.uk/p/recticel-eurothane-gp-pir-insulation-board-2400-x-1200-x-25mm-IRESR025

I removed the aluminium on one side of the of the foam and stuck it with glues like No More Nails or Sticks Like Sh1t

Here is one of the hatches.

We actually sail with a dehumidifier on board to keep down condensation in the boat.  If you want, if you pm your email, I will send you a copy of an article I wrote on minimising condensation in yachts.

Hi M&R, can you tell me what product you use to insulate your mattresses?  I have also found that these can get damp and then affected by mildew when in use for extended periods.
I have previously used a nylon mesh type layer with some success, but I'm always on the lookout for other solutions.

Hi Taylor,
I too have been thinking about improving the look of the forecabin and have been toying with the idea of getting a timber merchant to run off some 100mm wide meranti strips probably about 6mm so they will have some bend and fix (glue and screw) them to the existing ply with 5mm gaps to ape the look of a Hallberg Rassy.
Martin&Rene , I will probably steal your idea as it is cheap and easy but it does not get over the problem which is that when it rains overnight (which as you know occasionally happens in scotland ) your moist breath has nowhere to go as you cannot open any of the portlights without getting wet.
S&J, I have been considering cutting down LURÖY, Slatted bed base, Standard King - IKEA but as I cannot visit the boat the plan is on hold so it will be nylon mesh again this year. A couple of years ago I sent off a paper pattern of the forecabin combined cushions and bought a cut to size memory foam topper which improved the comfort.
It,s not over till the fat lady drowns

Thanks for the insulation tips.

I have used a foil based bubble wrap type insulation  under deck and on top of  the false ceiling  lining. I also put closed cell foam down the back of the plywood side liners. The larger space under the roof linings at the side has been filled with hard foam insulation cut to fit.

This significantly reduced condensation and made the forecabin much warmer for late autumn and early spring sailing.

I will take up the idea of putting some under the berth. Great idea as it will help reduce the cold bridge under the bunk cushions.

We have not tried out the new bunk cushions which were made using the existing foam but with an extra memory foam topper added!

Hanse never sealed the underside of the shelves or the bottom of the plywood hull linings with Sika. I am going to as I think it will ensure any further condensation or deck leaks will never get into the berth cushions.

Steve.

Steve

So as to avoid thread drift, I have started a thread on Chit Chat about "Minimising Condensation".  I look forward to seeing the results of your handiwork.
