    Posted: 16 May 2021 at 09:59
Hi all,

My jib sheet sheave gave up today.  Jammed the sheet and needs replacing.  Does anyone know:

a) the part number (Selden mast)

b) if it can be replaced with the mast standing (it looks to be mounted inside the mast).  I don't see anything similar with some web searches.  Appears to have tapped bolt holes.  Everything I see is fastened outside the mast, not internally.

Thanks,
Jeff

I’m not sure about the part number but it looks like the part can be removed from the outsized by removing the screws and tilting it so the top and bottom mounting tabs will pass through the mast opening.

Sounds like my Rigger has it sorted.  Apparently Selden drill out the axels to make them light so they can collapse.  He will rebuild it or replace it somehow to make it good again.

I see Seldén is commenting on all their self-tacking jib installations that the jib sheet needs a 2:1 purchase from the car to the clew to avoid overloading the sheavebox in the mast.

Several sources - one is here:

On our 400 there was just a single purchase setup when we acquired the boat - and I haven’t corrected that since the sheet hasn’t been to heavy to handle. I believe this may be quite common.

Guess I should set up a block at the clew now in order to protect the mast sheave-box!

…but what kind of block should go at the clew end of the selftacking sheet? I guess it should be as light as possible since it will be flung around and might hit someone or something. Still needs to be robust though… A regular shackle fastening would make twist adjustments easier while a soft shackle is safer…
Any input here?

the standard Selden sheave box for S/T sheet is rated at 2.5kn or 2.5T you aren't generating anything like this kind of load. My 400 has sailed with 1:1 for many years no issue, its always a compromise, higher load to sheet the sail but significantly reduced friction to furl the sail. For me with below deck furling drum its impossible to furl sail other than with a winch which is not clever. I have electric winch for jib sheet so sheeting loads are no issue.

2.5 kN is approximately 250 kg, 0.25 metric ton

Not unthinkable to put that load on the selftacker jib sheet of a Hanse 400, or to exceed it

If the Sheave Box is rated for 2.5kN   then the line load allowed is approx.50% of that (tension on both sides of sheave.  That would mean line load only 1.25kN, which is just 127kg. That seems very low. I suspect the sheave box is rated 2500 daN, which is roughly 2.5 Tonne

Looking at a new self tacking jib system recently for my 2008 model 400  Ronstan told me the block on the car needs to be in excess to 1000Kg rating with 2:1 reeving to clew, which is of course 9.810 kN. Their calculations were based on sail area.
