I would just like to share a little experience to back up some of the posts around the quality of through hull fittings , valves and subsequent metal fittings.
So we were sailing from Falmouth towards the Scillies the wind was dropping and shifting to on the nose so we dropped the head sail and motor sailed, some 10 nautical miles past the lizard point the engine / propeller started to vibrate too much for comfort so we had to drop engine revs down to 1100rpm. We took the decision to sail back to a sheltered bay and have a dive expecting to see something around the prop. The dive revealed nothing around the prop. Whilst checking things the cooling hose for the shaft seal was touched and the metalwork failed on the seacock. We then had the optional internal fountain. The experience was alarming to say the least, we had bought the boat in January, I had read the forum commentary on the through hull fittings and was planning to replace in the coming winter.
We plugged the fountain spent an hour or so on the phone to find a lift out then sailed to Fowey for a lift out the next morning. She was lifted and all through hull fittings, valves and metal pipe fittings replaced. The majority of through hull fittings collapsed on removal. The vibration after much head scratching turned out to be the thrust bearing bolts being slightly loose.
All is well that ends well. The boat is a 2008 540e
So if you don't want the optional internal water fountain ensure you have confidence in the quality of these fittings
