Dear All,

we are preparing the process of removing the keel in order to transport a 588 by truck (from a lake to the sea). Did any of you already do the operation? any suggestions? do you know anybody inside Hanse that could advice the technicians on the specific procedure to adopt?

Best,
Piero

update: the keel was successfully removed, after 4 days of work by about 3 expert technicians. The epoxy layer between the hull and the keel was cut by means of supercutters and oscillating blades, including separating the bolts from the surrounding epoxy, and finally by applying a large number of wedges in order to create additional force. With some calculation, the strength of the epoxy is about 700 times the weight of the keel (i have the short one, about 8t). In some sense, it's reassuring: the bolts plus the epoxy should be a very solid solutions against keel detachment - many boat manufacturers adopt sicaflex in order to make the process easier and rely only on the bolts...now we just have to transport both elsewhere and reattach the keel!

Pzucchel -

That does seem reassuring. hope we don't need to take our keel off at any stage.

I was initially worried about having an iron keel,   but I've been careful about painting it and checking for cracks or corrosion or discoloring.    So far so good.   It is reassuring to know that it was so well put together.    We can all hope...

I think that the keel has even an additional epoxy coating, at least on the top part...
