Just curious - seems to be one logical location and pains me to think of the hole through the cabin top that would be required + lost wet weather gear hanging space.. (obvious spot is between aft head door and port side nav table?
But for early/late season sailing in the Nordics it would be nice to have more heater than the diesel air heater provides. Thinking things like stoves from Kimberly, Dickinson marine, Cubic mini, etc.

I installed a diesel water heater and 3 radiators with fans. I have also seen flat panel radiators and am considering adding them to the heads.
Putting a big hole in the top just bothers me a bit to much.

I’ve been thinking about something like a Dickinson also.
5kw webasto not really cutting when it’s cold. Direct heat in the main cabin would be nice. 400 not so dissimilar from 430. Between bathroom door and navigation seat seems the only logical place available. It would narrow the pathway, you could run/fall into it, while heeling at sea. Stack through the roof I’d be less concerned about, it’s very close to where the 400 allready has the air vents. One more hole won’t make the difference. Biggest challenge, in my view, would be where to put the fuel tank. Any further thoughts? Peter

I did a mock up install of a Dickinson P1200 on my H418 to appreciate sizing for possible future installation. I fits fine so assume as the H430 is a larger boat it will be fine as well. The attached photo shows two support tube legs but if I install then I will change to one central larger tube leg in which I will feed both the power supply cable and gas pipe up from under the deck board and through the tube leg to the underneath of the unit.

Great to see this question coming to life a little - thanks everyone!
And wow Ranu, that's an attractive install. I don't have that curved wall though - that looks like it might get it slightly out of the way. I had a diesel heater in my last boat and would love to avoid that smell.. Hence thinking a small wood stove instead. Which saves me the trouble with the fuel tank and fuel line. Then it's really just a question of where to install and put the exhaust pipe. One question I have about the wall install you've shown Ranu is how there pipe will interact with the boom/lazybag, etc. Have you looked at that?

Hi Rick - a couple of clarifications about my ‘fake’ heater
mock up. I built the mock up to Dickinson P1200 heater sizings out of MDF and
other cheap materials available from my local hardware store. The Dickinson
P1200 heater runs on propane gas not diesel. I added a couple of bespoke
components including the bottom inverted square shaped U bracket and the centre support tube leg. The
double tubed single exhaust duct (combustion gas out the inner tube and intake
air in the outer tube) will exit the saloon deckhead as shown in the photo. The
topside (upper deck) chimney is cylindrical in shape and only about 100mm in
diameter and 100mm high so it is very low profile. I will position the chimney
port side and fwd of the dodger, outboard of and about three quarters the way alongside
the companionway sliding hatch screwed down cover. Please see the Dickinson web
site for the P1200 and its components. Hope this helps in your decision. |

Hi Ranu, understood it was a mockup - just meant it looked slick! Did not realise it was gas though. Interesting option. And like that the above deck chimney is so low profile. Will have a look!

Photoshop of where my Liferaft will be installed and you can see the position of the chimney to the port side.
