Hi,
This is my first post, glad to be part of the community. I have a build slot this year for my 348 and I'm planning to add a Helm Bimini where I will also mount some solar panels. I haven't opted for Factory or Dealer fitted Bimini (Yet) as I have a friend with a metal fabrication business. I was hoping someone had plans or a technical drawing of a helm Bimini for a 348 so I can get him to work something custom up for me based on the drawings. Does anyone have anything please or could point me in the right direction? Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new boat.
We went through the same process when we ordered Night Train, wanting to get everything organised whilst we waited for her to be delivered. The Hanse option of a bimini was for one over the helm station only and we wanted a full length one. Our agent advised against trying to get anything made up prior to delivery as a) it is hard to decide exactly what you want without seeing the actual boat and b) it requires really quite detailed measurements to get it exactly right. In the end we ordered the helm station bimini frame only from Hanse and had it extended here along with the canvas work. We also had two 125 watt Solbain flexible solar panels mounted on it. Good luck and I hope the wait for your new boat doesn't seem too long! Paul |

Steven, I was in the same situation when we bought our 345. Luckiiy I saw one on a boatshow with the factory solution. This was complete crap. You could not sit at the helm upright,
Finally I had a solution designed and made by Nauti Sattler of Germany ( www.nauti.de ), which they are selling now several times / year. This solution should also be suitable for the 348. I don't know how tall you are. The height under the boom is limited. I am 1.90 m and have to bend slightly. Your idea with solar panels would mean that you need an arch behind the boom and step down the canvas for the extension over the cockpit. I have no idea about the visual impression of such a solution. Connecting the cockpit bimini with the dodger might be a good idea especially in the UK climate

Thank you both for the information and sharing. Definitely want to have the option to extend the cockpit Bimini to the Spray Hood (I won't argue bout the UK weather!)
I'll have a look at your solution also.

I think Fendant's comment about the height of the boom are significant as there will not be a big gap between the boom end and the backstay on a 348 in which to fit a bimini. Benefits Can sit in the cockpit for meals when its windy, cold or raining Can have the entry hatch open whilst cooking. Can be used for hanging wet clothes etc, which often are dry before you get up, as the cockpit tent heats up very quickly in the morning sun. etc We can sail with the bars still in place folded back against the backstay, so it is just a matter of pulling over the canvas and we can do this quickly. You can see ours here We have chartered a larger yacht in the Caribbean that had a bimini, that then had zip-in sides, zip-in extension piece to the spray hood and a zip- in back, but that seems rather over the top for a UK based yacht.

Thanks for the advice, we went for the full enclosure in the end. Given we will be in the North Sea most of the time, a handy place to hang the wet weather gear sounded like a good idea!

It's not pretty but Tecsew have delivered excellent canvas for my Hanse.
My needs in the Med are very different and the full length (but not enclosed,) Bimini works well fo us, although getting to the end of the boom (especially when reefing) is a challenge.
