I have an issue of stopping the boom swinging when having the bimini up and motoring in very light winds or very strong winds with a sea swell. I have tried tethering it on where the kicker/vang is attached to the boom and the midship cleats but it still moves. I’m sure others have this problem and maybe solved it, so any suggestions would be grateful appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yep! At the simplest I just attach a pair of sail ties to the boom end. Then attach with a rolling hitch to the back stay on either side. The rolling hitch allows a bit of adjustment to the tension if needed. Then you can ease off on the main sheet and/or vang. I also have a preventer line in place and that can be used in more extreme sea states.

HI Mark
Without the binimi up I use the backstay deck eyes or the aft side deck eyes, but my binimi would chafe on the preventers when up. I thought of using the backstays but wondered about the sideways load on them, but will give it a go next time. Cheers |

Thank you for posting this question and solution. I had the swing issue a couple times in heavy seas while motoring back into the harbor after sailing. I wondered if there was a way to "lock" the pulleys in the main sheet system, but now I will try the rolling hitch to back stay idea!

hello
With the Bimini up We use the SB and BB preventers(bulletalie) to keep the boom on place. From the attachment point of the main sheet on the boom via low frictions rings fixed on the turnbuckle of the mainshrout and lead backwards via a block on the padeye to the spinnaker winches and extra tension on the uphaul(topping lift?) |

We run a line from the aft boom/main sheet attachment point to a snatch block at the rail, and then back to secondary winch. You can add a snatch block to the boom/main sheet attachment point and run a looped line as noted above, which makes removal of this line possible from the cockpit.
Really annoying having the boom bounce around while motoring in rolling seas. This approach quiets things down nicely.

unfortunately the newer Hanse don’t have side rails anymore only 4 padeyes.
It looks nice without but less practical 😩 and the padeyes are not always on the right position.

We take a line down to the centre mooring cleat from the aft main sheet pulley connection on theboom. Pull the boom over 10-15 degrees and then tighten the main sheet
Works well All the best Paul

Wild: You might try a snatch block at the midship cleat.

For this job the padeyes are at a good position to lead the lines to the second winches . 😀 What I ment is: with a siderail you have much more options to fix snatch blocks like barbarhaulers for the spi ect.
