Dear all,
What is the typical range of backstay pressures you use? I had recently an interesting comment from the selden representative in Lagos, that explained me I had machined my main furler pulley because I didn't release to zero the backstay pressure during furling. It makes sense, I never exceeded 100 bar so normally I shouldn't have bent the mast too much... But in case you do, the furler load surely increases.

Dear Piero,

It s absolutely correct, I always released the backstay pressure when i furl in, whatever the pressure is.
never had any trouble with it.
which Lagos are you in?

... And what pressure do you set when you sail?

I am assuming you are all talking about mast furling and not boom furling?

I've not seen any issues with boom furling.

Sure, mast furling on a selden furling mast...

... Which backstay pressure do you use? Even if masts, are not identical, I wonder how people chooses the "right" backstay pressure... Visually, looking to the mast bending? By sensing with their hand the backstay wire tension? (Black) magic?

Hi Piero,
Sorry, missed that one... I check the backstay pressure by looking at the main. if it becomes windy, around 20/25 knts, i increase the pressure until it creates an opening channel on the biggest surface of the main, and then the steering becomes smoother as well. I never check the manometer.....

It was more about looking at the mast and the sails rather than any particular number.    It ended up with 4-5 different uses depending upon wind speed and direction (upwind in a stiff breeze, etc..)

Let me rephrase my question: what is the maximum pressure you had ever applied without breaking anything?

I never checked the exact maximum pressure since I use the backstay to regulate the main, at some point it is not necessary to go further when I get the right adjustment. sorry!
