Greetings race fans.

Mark on Twelve-Winded Sky are nearing the 1/2 point of their trip to Oahu, currently surfing the Pacific swells with their A2 spinnaker driving them at speeds of 8.5 to 9 knots!!!  Here is his report from this morning:

0800 7/13 position 28 24.713N x 137 26.589W

Good morning from Mark on Twelve-Winded Sky. And a good morning it is... for the first time in more than a day the wind has backed and we have the new A2 up. That sure feels good... good enough to offset the grumpiness i was feeling when I got dragged up to the foredeck on my off watch to get it set. When I was finally on my feet, and pulling the turtle out of the v-berth I told Randy "I'm not really awake yet so I'm going to need some more support from you on this." He responded "You're good enough, you're smart enough, and dog gone it, people like you!" Not really what I had in mind when I asked for support... but it helped! I'm very lucky to have Randy as a partner for this race.

We're staying well-fed and healthy and actually fairly well rested due to having so much white sail time in the past couple of days.

The boat is going well. I mentioned I needed to get some advice on a knocking sound my autopilot was making, after consulting with PYI I've determined it's nothing serious, just some play in the draglink. I'll attempt a field repair today, probably just adding a washer to take up some of the space on the ball/pin interface.
Even though I have decades of coastal and bay sailing experience, this is my first pac cup and first ocean crossing. One thing that has surprised me a bit is how emotions are intensified out here. When things are going good, it feels amazing... when things aren't, like when the wind is light or there are issues with the boat, it can feel very bad indeed, almost overwhelming at times. So, when I found out the autopilot issue isn't serious, it was like a 180 degree turn for my mood.

Finally, just a comment on the beauty of being out here. Last night the moon was huge in the sky, and framed by lovely silver grey clouds... the moonlight reflecting off of the water... it was breathtaking.  I've never seen anything quite like it.

As a counter point I should mention that about 30 minutes ago we saw a whale carcass floating at the surface. Couldn't have been more than about 200 yards away from us. Sure glad we didn't hit it. This was at approx position 28 22.040N x 137 40.790W

Greetings race fans!

I don’t have any updates from Mark and Randy on Twelve-Winded Sky other than they are out of fresh food and are “enjoying” freeze-dried and canned meals.  It is safe to say they anticipated that they would be enjoying a mai tai at the Kaneohe Yacht Club by now, but the weather gods have not been kind to the fleet this edition of the Pacific Cup.  The current estimate is for them to arrive in Oahu on the 21st at 9:10 Hawaii time.  Let’s wish them luck in the final stretch.

Final from the “race deck” - Mark and Randy crossed the finish line of the Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay on Oahu this morning at 5:14:04 HST.  They are on the way to the docks at the Kaneohe Yacht Club as I write this.  Hugs from their loved ones, mai tai’s and a warm meal, and of course a good long shower await them at the club.

Congratulations Boys.  Well done!
