Hi Sveino,
As far as I know from the mast maker Sparacraft, the mast itself is 19,45 m long. The top of the coachroof is around 1,70m above the WL: that means something around 21,5 m. I could guve more acurate measurement within a fortnight as my boat should be delivered. Cheers Alain |

Hi Alain !
Thank you. We have a summer house in the Lofoten Islands (North Norway), but we have to pass a 18 m. bridge to get there. 18m. meens about 21-22m. in best conditions, so it may go . We have to test this at WERY slow speed the first time... Looking forward to hear more about yor boat. Cheers Svein Olav |

Sveino,
You should watch the Swedish film: 'S.O.S. En segelsällskapsresa' with Lasse Åberg for tips on how to get under that bridge!

Yes, that´s one way of doing it. I once used my dinghy to heel the boat to get under a bridge. I was a bit nervous, but it worked... Was thinking about that film when I was just under the bridge. Svein Olav |

Frank,
Is there a way for me to watch that film? The 430e "Oki Noki", that was on the Duesseldorf boat show, was tested by the German magazine "Yacht". They reported that the mast height indeed is 21.5 meter above the water line. I intend to make a base for the masttop light, Windex, wind unit and VHF antenna that can hinge. When needed I can hinge the base, so I can pass a bridge of just a little more than 21.5 meter. |

In the movie, the boom is rotated all the way out to the side of the boat, and the wife is ordered to climb out on the boom. The boat tilts so that the mast passes under the bridge. However, the wife falls of the boom, and the mast rights itselfs and jams through the bridge. The sailboat, a new Maxi, is completely stuck.
However, the bridge is a rail road bridge, and the train comes. The top 2 ft of the mast is run over by the train.
After the train has passed, the bridge opens (Yes, it was a lifting bridge!!) and the remains of the mast is stuck in the bridge. The sailboat is lifted at least 1 meter fully out of the water, before it falls down with a big splash.
It is hysterically funny, however not an example to follow.
Next summer, the husband and wife have bought a small summer cottage by a lake.

Frode,
Thank you. I do not have to see the film. Your description was enough to have a very good laugh! |
