Hello Hanse 371 owners,

Last week we took out our 371 DS (2001) with centre board / lifting keel, for maintenance and winter storage. The issues to be solved were the rigging (original rigging to be replaced) and other mast work and the main issue to fix the centre board. Last year we bought our boat and since then the centre board was not working as it should be. It was stuck inside the keel and we were not able to lower it.

Now it appeared that the centre board was completely eroded / corroded inside the keel. The centre board is a steel frame with lead around and protected with a polyester shield.

My question is: has anyone an idea where we can get a new centre board? or has any one here some information or experiences in the centre board versions of the 371 or 341? any help is welcome.

luckily they were able to get the old version out...

Here below some picture how the centre board looks like and one how it should look like...

Here an update on the centre board issues.

A new centre board has been produced, not a direct copy of the original structure. From a 80 mm thick steel plate a new shape has been milled. impressive!

next the centre board will get a coating and placed back into the keel.

Hi Corvander,

Forum member, Arcadia sent through a link to your project which is a fantastic achievement.

We are in the process of buying a Hanse 312 with lifting centre plate/ keel.  The boat survey identified the need to investigate/ refurbish the centre plate including replacing the pin and nylon guide blocks.  Although the 312 is a smaller boat and the lifting mechanism seems to be different, we would be very grateful for some advice from your project:

·         1.  The pivot pin looks counter-sunk into the keel housing.  What retained it and was it easy to remove?  Were there bushes fitted which could be replaced and were you able to separate from the nylon guide disc?

·         2. The surveyor believes there are nylon anti-vibration pads inside the keel box housing which guide and help stop movement when the centre plate/ keel is in the lift position inside the box?  Were there any nylon pads/ blocks and how were they retained?

·         3. The 312 uses a simple line and pully mechanism to lift the keel by a winch on the coach roof.  We have seen some cracking of the coach roof where the line penetrates the deck vertically from the keel lift point.  Did you have to replace any of the lifting arrangement or strengthen the deck structure?

We hope to source a spare pin, bush and nylon blocks from Hanse, but it looks like you had an excellent machinist to make you a whole new keel and pin arrangement.

Any information would be most helpful.  I hope you now have the boat in the water and the keel being put to good use!

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Thanks for asking and I'm happy to answer to my best knowledge your questions:

Find here the article the shipyard posted on the refit of the cetnreboard:
https://degierjachtservice.nl/2023/04/25/geslaagde-vervanging-van-het-midzwaard-op-de-hanse-371/

(sorry is in dutch, but you will find ways to understand Smile).

The main issue with our centreboard was that the lead (plumbum) was corroded and whit that complely stuck inside the keel. That was the hardest part to get it out.

1. it is correct the pin is countersunk into the cast iron keel, the shipyard removed it by drilling and removing the material arround it, what material it was i don't know, but that was an easy part. Looked it was a short of putty.

2. As far as i know there were no nylon blocks or what so ever, only the round plates around the pin area. these have been reused, no issues whit that.

3. Our lifting emchanism is complely diffeent, it is located close to th ekeel bolts adn is an electric winch. so i do not have any experience with the 312 structure. Lifting mechnism was still ok adn no replcement, the electric winch was installed by th eprevious owner 20 yrs ago. a bit complicated, but functional.

we tried to purchase spare parts from Hanse, so a new centreboard, however they did not have any longer thee. I would not expect too much from Hanse on spare parts for th eolder versions. It is easier adn much cheaper to hav e alocal shop making a new pin if you need. we have been reusing the pin, the local shop made new bronze bus inside the steelplate centreboard.

I'm happy to send pictures and i also have the original drawings. (copies of).

With best regards,

Cor

Hi John,

and yes, very happy with the result: sailing performance increased a lot with the use of the centreboard. We boucht the ship 2 yrs ago and didn't use the cetnreboard before, since it was stuck inside.

Hi Cor,

Thanks for your responses to the questions which fills in some parts of the jigsaw to refurbish our 312 keel.  It sounds like you have a very different lifting arrangement, but interesting that the pin survived and you managed to replace the bushes - which we will do.  Our centre plate is in reasonable condition, so we hope to re-use.

Some lovely pictures and clearly improved sailing performance!

Thanks again and I'll keep you posted on how we get on.

Regards,
John
