Hi everybody,
I am planning to buy a Hanse 325 (used boat). In my country, Spain, carry on a life raft is mandatory but the boat I am going to make an offer doesn't have any life raft.

My question is, where did you used to locate the life raft? is there any space enough, for one of 6 people, or has to be  maximum for 4 due to space?

Thank you.

Here's my solution (on a H355 but very similar to 325).  It sits on a SS cradle

White hull, 2 cabins, Volvo D1-30, Selden rig, removable mainsheet track system, Simrad (now B&G)-Jefa autopilot.

On our 320 we had a soft case 4 person in the aft port cockpit locker. Just fits. There wouldn’t be room for a 6 person.
Cant take a joke, don't buy a boat.

If you're going to have to buy a new liferaft I'd only get a 6-person one if I was going to carry 5/6 people.  From personal experience I can assure you that they are truly horrible things to be in at sea, with the effects made worse by under-loading to the point of incapacitating motion sickness and potential injury as you get thrown around (imagine being inside a washing machine....).  The larger ones are a good bit heavier as well which will affect your boat's performance and stability.

As to where is best, while it must be capable of being easily launched you should still consider the effect on stability of the boat.  If you're mainly doing short coastal journeys then the back end is perfectly fine but stability and performance will be affected in larger sea-states and most certainly if racing.  The coach roof is a common location; much better as the weight is more central but the raised centre of gravity will still affect the Stability Curve of the vessel.  Again, probably not much of an issue unless you regularly go offshore and accept the chance of heavier seas.

Another choice (and the one I made) is to have the liferaft in a valise (lighter than a case) in a side locker where its weight is further forward and lower yet its still easily accessible.  However, this does require good discipline in not chucking all sorts of other gear on top or around it.

There's no 'proper' answer, I'm afraid; only compromises.  However, placing it should be secondary to really knowing how to use it - preferably well before you need it!

HANSE 325 has a locker on the port side of the cockpit where you can easily fit a 6 person life raft. The only ''problem'' is that the locker is so big you end up stuffing many things on top of the life raft.

In my 320 the liferaft valise for 6 pax fits perfectly between the wheel pedestal and the main halyard block in the cockpit. It is at hand in case needed and no obstruction problems.

Made a dedicated cradle for my new Viking Resqyou Ocean, just to have a valise Seago in the port locker.
But the you first have to mount the solar/radar/antenna(s) poles Big smile
