Hi everybody,
we are 90% ready to order a 430e.
Reading all the topics on this website was very usefull to make decisions.
One important question remains for us related to the draft... From our experience (western and eastern med.) a shallow draft (less than 2 m) is really convenient for many anchorages and small harbours. So we are thinking about ordering the shallow 1,80 m draft.
Did anyone already make a similar choice ? How to evaluate precisely the drawbacks on sailing performance ?
Thanks in advance to anyone who would exchange on this topic.

Hi I chose normal draft, even though most of my cruising will b around the west country which is more akin to shallow in some creeks.I felt more secure to have deeper draft, however i am not an expert just took a lot of advise.I expect my 430 in a few weeks.

Hi Terry,
hope you get your 430 as soon as possible so you will enjoy plenty of nice sailing before the winter comes.
Where will she be delivered ?

I doubt that you will see any performance issue between shallow draft and standard draft (at least in speed or turning). I would imaging that you may reef earlier with the shallow draft boat. I ordered the shallow draft for sailing in the Cheasapeke and am glad I did. Even with the shallow draft, I have hit bottom in many of our marinas. If I had selected the full draft keel, I would have to stay out of many harbors and row in with the dingy. Your selection should be based on where you are sailing 90% of the time. If you are inland or coastal, you probably should consider the shallow draft. If your mainly open ocean, you probably should consider the full draft.

I always thought the longer the keel the more stability though.
I hope I have not made a mistake.!!
I guess if I hit the bottom enough I will have a shallow keel!!!
just kidding.

You should be able push the boat further up against the wind, with the deeper keel.

Thanks Mike, for sharing part of your experience. We're mainly coastal that's why we're thinking of shallow draft.
