Hi all,
Colin, has kindly sent to me a quick report on the recently held Medway Regatta, sadly the weather was not fantastic, but it did not stop the event from happening.
Hopefully some of the attending boats will see this and put some pictures up on the forum.
Well done and thanks,to Colin for arranging it, and to the club for hosting this event and well done for the boats that braved the summer weather to attend.
Dave
PS Hopefully we will have more not just here but around the country, I for one will now look at trying to arrange one at Pwllheli ( North Wales)
Hanse Medway Rally 2009
The wind blew and changed our plans, the showers were heavy but still twelve boats registered, ten attended and eight raced.
Five visiting boats from as far as Portsmouth, Eastbourne and Ipswich braved the forecast to join up with five local boats for this years Medway Rally.
With winds of force 4 to 6 and heavy showers the Friday evening BBQ scheduled to be held at the marina had to be moved at the last minuet to the Medway Yacht Club who kindly laid on a BBQ, marquee and trot. With a few willing helpers the BBQ was lit and everybody cooked off their food and enjoyed the clubs bar facilities whilst meeting and chatting to other skippers and crew.
Saturday saw the end to the showers but blustery conditions for the race that was started by committee boat down river from the marina. Everybody had agreed that in view of the conditions no spinnakers or down wind sails were to be flown and the race officer set a 15 mile in river course.
An upwind start had the fleet beating against the tide to what turned out to be the controversial windward mark. The organiser had issued a course sheet that had the buoy left to starboard whilst the course read by the race officer left it to port. The fleet was split with four boats correctly leaving it to port (Little Minx 400, Vesper 370, Rosie Day 320 and Magic 341) and four to starboard. In the end it was agreed that no racing advantage had been gained and in the rally spirit the results would stand.
Little Minx, with extra crew gained from one of the two boats who had decided not to race, gave everybody a lesson on sail trimming and keeping the boat moving at maximum speed to build up an unbeatable lead. Posh Totty 430 started late but sailed through the fleet but then missed the finish line so no time was taken. Vesper and CoCo 400 enjoyed a tacking duel with Vesper coming out on top and Scotch Mist 320, Rosie Day, Denali 370 and Magic all fighting it out in the challenging conditions.
The conditions now gusting to 33 knots true curtailed any plans for rafting up in what should have been a great opportunity to relive the race and explore other boats but everybody was happy to be back alongside in the marina.
Saturday night saw the crews repair to MYC to join their regatta party – with a hog roast and dancing to a live band. The Commodore handed out the prizes and commented that he had never seen the club so busy.
Sunday was forecast for lighter winds but turned out to be just as blustery and after the excursions of Saturday only Little Minx and Scotch Mist joining MYC boats and CoCo acting as committee boat in a fun treasure hunt. Scotch Mist came a very credible second and Little Minx in a reversal of Saturdays result proved that racing was more their thing.
In spite of the British summer weather and the changes in plan everybody seemed to have fun and maybe we will be back next year.
