Hi
Does anyone race a Hanse 291 or 292 under Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) Handicap. If so I would be interested in their number please. |

I started sailing my Laser last spring at my club, and have improved
greatly, so as now i beat everyone in my handicap that isn't in the
national squad. As a resulat i'd really like to start sailing with the
proper Laser class, and try and become a far better sailor, i hear a
lot of the 4.7/Radial circuit, but i don't have a clue how to go about
getting onto it, i'm a member of the UKLA, but how do i go about
getting more into Laser sailing?
Thanks :) |

Hi to try and answer both of these questions in one post, but it surprises me that we have questions about laser sailing on the myHanse site, but never mind.
Grautvornix.
To try and find a PY for your 291/292 I would suggest getting a starting point by visiting the following link.
This as I said will give you a staryting point and for local conditions can be adjusted accordingly.
Levin Chris,
Now regarding Laser sailing. You have two options if you sail in UK, sadly you have not put a location on your members page, if you had then I would be able to give you more exact data. For example if you sailed in the midlands area, I would initially suggest that you have a full season on what they call the Grand Prix circuit, details on the UKLA website ( as you are already a member that is a bonus)basically it is a circuit of open meets around the Midlands area with good club and national laser sailors. After a year or so on that and when you have improved your confidance, I would suggest that you then look at World Championship Qualifiers and this all results are then put onto the National ladder which will after your last previous 6 results give you your national ranking. All dates are on the UKLA website, usually the format is - 3 weekend comps in the spring, starting with Stokes Bay in around February time, and three in the Autumn. The weekend is usaully 2 races on a saturday and 3 on a Sunday but hese are often open to change due to the weather.
It is usually Radials and full rigs together at these meets but in seperate fleets. The 4.7 having its own series dates. When the time is right then the ladder ranking is checked to see who has qualified to be selected for the Worlds and European champs.
Obviously as the Laser is a "one design" you need to ensure that you conform to the class rules, this is usually self policing but at the qualifiers then there is often some inspections by the class measurer, so be warned, they can be strict, as I was at some.
If you need any further information please PM me.
Good luck.
