New 312 owner - 25 days of rain and gales here in the Northwestern USA so I haven't had much chance for getting to know the Black Skimmer - thinking of putting a widward traveler and sheets on the head sail as the self tacking seems slugish. Has anyone tried either of these configurations?

Hi Orell1,

Welcome to the Hanse forum and congratulations on the new yacht.

You'll maybe find you'll get quicker responses if you ask this kind of Q on the 312 forum.

We used the self tacking gib as our only headsail in our first year of ownership (2005) on our 461 - and found it's ease of use when shorthanded overcame the slight lack of performance against an overlapping larger sail.

We've chosen to add a 'code 0' headsail to our inventory rather than just changing to a bigger headsail - believing it will give us more options when off the wind also.  Can't advise if we've made the right choice as yet to use this sail in anger, but expect to be able to give feedback by April 06.

In the meantime - enjoy your new boat!

Cheers

JOHN

Orell 1;

Wecome.  There are only a few of us Yanks who own Hanses.  I've just purchased a 370e which is being displayed (starting today) at the Cleveland Boat Show, and, at the beginning of Feb at the Chicago Sail Show.  This is an excellent forum.

Enjoy your Hanse!

Thanks for the welcome! I'll try sheets for more control of the foresail and go back to the self tacking on short handed days. We have a cockpit traveler and will probably try a windward car rather than the port and starboard cleats installed in Germany. Love to tinker!
