I have recently bought a Hanse 312 2005. I love this yacht

very much but i have discovered a little but still very anoying problem. The heater, a Webasto, which is situated in the place of storage on the portside of the cock pit carries the odour from the holding tank, also situated in the storage, into the soloon and into the other spaces onboard the yacht. As the heater collects its air from the storage it seems to be quite natural. Is this not a bad tecnical solution? my experience is that a holdingtank always produces at least a little odour.
Has anyone experienced the same problem and has anyone a solution? Of course I can change the sanitary hoses or place some kind of ventilation in the storage but wouldn't the best solotion be to make the heater collect its air from outside the boat, for example from the cock pit or from the stern. But there is of course the exhaust from the heater. One wouldn,t like to mix the exhausts and the fresh air.
I would be very greateful for a peace of advice.

Hello
I have the same configuration in my 312 and no smell from the waste tank. So it must be possible to have the heater on without the smell. Unfortunately I have no practical advice for you other than to check the plumbing. < ="text/" ="//ajax.cloudflare.com/cdn-cgi/nexp/v=49212922/apps1.min.js">__CF.AJS.init1(); Edited by PRCH - 31 October 2011 at 18:18 |

I recognice your problem, we have faced the same smell back in time.
I have been told that the hose needs to be replaced say every 4-5 years due to that it will capture the bad smell into the hose.
One method to reduce the smell is that we use a chemical called Green Viking when we know we are staying more than one night in a harbour.
When parking the yacht in our home port I use fresh water to clean the head system, salt water standing still for example between weekends will rutten and that will be the source of a bad smell.
Another thing is that we have stopped to use Olive oil to lubricate the head pump and instead do I use vaseline or some other grease (propeller grease). I have been told that using olive oil result in a surface at the top of the holding tank preventing the stuff in the tank to get oxygen which can result in wrong process in the tank (increase the bad smell).
This works for us and I have been using the same hose that was installed by Hanse in 2006 Edited by skipper - 01 November 2011 at 10:37 |

Hello again
During my visit at Hanse Boot 2011 in Hamburg, I talked with a manufacturer of holding tanks. In order to avoid smell, they gave the advice to put aluminum tape around all the hoses in the system. Any comments? |
