On the evening of June 29, 2012, approximately 190 boats ranging from 26-86' left Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA to race across Lake Michigan 76nm to South Haven, Michigan, USA. This 74th running of the Queen's Cup was sponsored by Milwaukee's South Shore Yacht Club and the finish was hosted by the South Haven Yacht Club.
Legacy has sailed this race for the past 3 years when it was only 68nm and ended in different ports than planned for 2012. While we have done well in our 3 prior outings (one 4th and two 2nds in our Division) this year was special since South Haven is our home port (and I chaired the Finish Committee!). With 6nm miles to go we were running at 7.6-7.8k and expected to be across the finish line in about 50 minutes. As of a sudden the wind disappeared. We went from 12k true to 1-3k true. In any event, 2 hrs and 12 minutes later we crossed, not knowing what the last 6 miles had done to our position. Five hrs later we found out that we were 1st in our Division (out of 14) and 15th overall (out of approx 185). I'm interested in any improvements that any of you have made to make your Hanse go faster. Have you faired the hull? The rudder? Other? Please advise. Many thanks. |

I'm back to report on the running of the 2015 Queen's Cup, an overnight race across Lake Michigan starting in Milwaukee, WI. that again this year ended in my home port of South Haven, MI. The last time it ended in my home port Legacy was fortunate enough to finish first in it's Division and 11th overall (out of 184). So, as you could expect, I felt some pressure this year. Fortunately the wind (9.5K-15K) and wind angle (110-90 degrees true) were favorable. At the end of 78.8 nm we found ourselves again first in our Division (16 boats) and second overall (about 165 boats). We averaged a little over 7.5K per hr. A great ride with a great crew. Can't wait until next year.

Mike, Good Luck in the Bayview Mac. The 2015 Queen's Cup was the first race that Legacy had been joined by another Hanse... a 400. Hope to see more of her in future races.
