Thanks for all the comments. It's not a sail area problem because in flat water we were keeping up with the front boats. It might be a pointing issue or a swell issue. So first I will concentrate on pointing in flat water to get up to 30 or close to it, then I'll see what happens in swell.

Here is a take off of the polar plot
So below 12 knotts I have to point at 30 degrees to get a decent VMG - ok this is with the self tacker, but I suppose it won't be too different.
At least now i can play with teh boat and compare with this table Edited by Mark&Catherine - 13 October 2013 at 10:12 |

So we have been experimenting and it turns out if we trim the sails properly then we can get to 30 apparent and beat the speed from the polar plots. The boat seams very sensitive to the slot, I dont know whether others have found the same? So we have been setting the Jib (105) and then truimming up the main to get the best slot shape and width. This proved to be worth doing as our speed and pointing ability increased.

One disappointment I had when I saw brochures for the 385 and 345 was that they did not have a mainsail track.
A few years ago, I chartered Jeanneau 32 footers on a couple of occasions in Greece. I did not like the 2 pulleys on the cabin roof mainsheet system as the only way you could get the boom anywhere near the centreline was to pull in hard on the mainsheet and this resulted in a tight leech with no ability to set the main up with any twist. These yachts did have mid-size overlapping jibs. I therefore took the lower pulleys of the cabin top and set them up on two rope bridles so that when the mainsheet was pulled in, the pulleys were just below the boom and were secured on the centreline of the boat (See photo). With this system I now had much more control of the mainshail shape. The downside is obviously that when you are on a light weather downwind leg, the pulleys hang down. It may be worth a try when you are racing and I am sure you could find an easy way to switch back to the normal set up when you are cruising. At the other end of the scale, as a dinghy sailor like yourself, one thing I find it hard to accept initially was just how early it paid to reef the mainsail on the Hanses. Echo of Wight gives his experience and I think you will find that in cruising mode on the beat you will be putting the first reef in before the true wind is 15kn. Of course you have an advantage; your warm Dubai air is less dense than our cold moist Scottish air. |

yes we have been thinking of putting a bridle in like a 505 would have, and perhaps if we made the bridle length adjustable we would get even more control.
Im glad you have tried it, it gives me some encouragement to try it
