This weekend I took my 311 off the mooring into storage. The engine start button didn't respond to the first try, then functioned normally after the second. When I was at the storage dock, I wanted to restart the engine for winterization purposes - nothing! At first I suspected that the starting battery might be flat, but my charger indicated 100%. Next, I began checking all the electrical connections and found that the main engine ground had pulled out of its terminal. To my surprise, blue electrical was the only thing the factory had used to secure the cable to the terminal. I'm only glad I wasn't out on the ocean when I made this unfortunate discovery! I will be installing new terminals with a mechanical fitting (or a crimp at least) this winter.
As an aside, the hourmeter on the Volvo engine panel never functioned consistently - broken-up numbers and the like. After firmly seating the cable in its terminal, the hourmeter sprang back to life. Did I live with a bad ground this whole time?
Finally, I need some more responses to my recent folding prop inquiry. Thanks for any help you can provide!
