Does anyone have any experience with the solidness of the bow-step platform with the anchor rollers build in? I just bought my 505 last year and it will be delivered in 6 weeks. I have arranged to add an extra bob-stay made out of solid stainless steel between the bow and the bow-step platform / anchor rollers. And also arranged to replace the standard anchor with a Rocna 30kg anchor.
I added the stainless steel bob-stay for 2 reasons:
  1. I am concerned with the strength of the platform when it gets the full load of an anchor (while picking it up in heavy seas). I have seen what that does to your rollers and chain in waves of approx. 1 meter. Theoretically you could pick the anchor up without too much force on the rollers and chain, but thats theory, everything changes in 35+ knots of wind.
  2. Also concerned with the strength when flying a spinnaker or code 0 attached to the bow-step platform.

People at the factory assured me this was not necessary.

Any opinions?

I anchored off of Point Conception last week.  One of the most "challenging" areas on the US west coast.  Winds were 25, gusting to 30+.  Relatively sheltered from the waves, but they were around 1 meter+.  Water depth was about 35 feet and I let out 150 feet of chain and did not move all night or see any signs of a problem.

I have anchored a number of times with my Hanse 545 and Rocna 33 kg and not had any problems. I always use lots of chain (4-5 times the debth) to dampen the shock effect from waves.

I have fitted a bobstay this winter. Will post Fotos when I get to the boat on 2-3 weeks.
Basically I used the lowest screw on the vertical stainless steel part, replaced it by a ring mounted on a corresponding threaded pin and a spanner connecting it to the front part of the platform.

Main reason for me was vertical stability for the gennaker/code 0. I am hoping to find a solution for a bow ladder by mounting an enlarged teak Plattform.

I have a 495 I have changed the anchor to an ultra anchor 35kg, as the factory supplied 25kg anchor would drag more times than I care to remember and is under rated for the size of the boat.
if the weather is likely to pick up I would always use a snubber which takes a lot of the strain off the anchor sprit.
I fly an asametric spinnaker and have had no issues with the strength of the sprit.

BobStay Hanse 505

Hereby the bobstay i had fitted on my Hanse 505. I agree with reactions that one could/should always use a snub-line to take the force off the anchorwinch, however i found myself on multiple occasions in a situtation where i had to use engine force to get my Rocna 33Kg anchor off the bottom as it had travelled half the way to China......In this solution i did not want to use the forestay chainplate to attach the bobstay, but i had a seperate chainplate installed.
Three reasons: Did'nt want to mess with anything that holds up the rigging, secondly the way it is positioned it would'nt have fit anyway, thirdly did'nt want it to be in the way of the Rocna when it is raised.
By the way...the code 0 attachment is mounted on top of the bobstay...

Nice job, did you buy this off the shelf or is it custom made, as I could be tempted to do the same as part of my winter projects.

Nice job!  As I look at the pictures I am reminded that I had a spinnaker line catch the single retaining pin that secures the anchor.  Somehow the pin came out and the anchor slammed into the side of the boat.  Lots of gelcoat damage.  Has anyone experienced anything similar and come up with a clever way to secure the anchor better?

Dave,

We put the anchor pin in as the first defense but also tie the anchor back to a strong point from the anchor shackle using a 25 mm (1 inch) webbing strap. If we are not going too far and the weather is good we just use the strap with is easier than lining up the anchor pin. We have used other types of anchor chain clamps previous on other boats but they are prone to problems and can still let go when you don't want them to.

Thanks, that is what I have been doing, not exceptionally pretty, but works.
