I understand now. I thought that the shower never drained. If it drains with venting could it be related to a partially clogged hose? A path with little slope, where a little overpressure can stop the priming?

I don’t believe the tube with the blue circle is working as a vent tube.
When it was ,it will be not on the connection at the bottom but on the topside of the Whale box.

It is on the top of the box

Someone said it earlier    Hanse, trying to save cost, assumed that not all drains into the box would be active at the same time and hooed one could do double duty as a vent

No evidence of this, just speculating

What Arcadia is suggesting is the right solution.
You need a small pipe from the box up to the motor housing to vent air.
I had the same issue and after this mod never happened again.

Simply if air can not be evacuated from
the box then water can not enter.

have a nice day

All of which makes sense.

*HOWEVER*

The thing I don't understand is why this wasn't the case all along? Why would this develop after 5 years of owning the boat?   The shower drained fine for the first few years.   The only thing I've done in the area is replace the grey water pump.

...maybe tubing to be cleaned from grease+detergents slum? i regularly flush some gel both from front shower and sink - to clean both gray boxes - and i never had this specific issue (the boat is 5y old).
