My 345 is now 6 years old
I've never opened up the steering panel to check the condition. Have others checked the steering linkages etc?. If so is it just a question of unscrewing that cockpit floor panel and seeing what's there!

Yes worth checking. Lift the the floor and you can adjust the cable tension and check the quadrant and autohelm. I haven't been into the pedestals, but that would be interesting too.

Our 345 gave a little drama in the steering department - pulling out from a fuel dock, there was a clunk and jamming of the steering. Initially thought we had hit a chain or snagged an underwater obstruction and managed to motor back to fuel berth without any steering. We were worried about the rudder, but lifted the floor to discover the stops on the steering quadrant had come loose (two large bolts hold it up), and tightening one of these bolts and replacing the missing one, fixed the steering perfectly. Since then, we have kept a regular check on the quadrant. Fortunately the fuel berth was not busy, took 40 mins to fix.

Our 345 is 7 years old and I have slightly tightened the steering cable that removes the play between the two wheels.

Many Thanks for replying.
I'll take a look this year. It's an area of the boat I dont understand very well so feel I need to familiarise myself.
Cheers.

I lifted the inspection hatch last year on my 2016 H345. No problems but I thought I should check. It s worth doing from time to time as I found it very dirty. I didnít think this could be doing the system much good and plan to clean the area again this year before the start of the season, ie now!
Jefa have a build diagram for the steering system on the H345 which is worth a look. If you canít find this, PM me and Iíll email a copy. This is particularly useful as they suggest lubricating some parts of the system but not others. The base of the columns can be accessed from the cabin and locker but I couldnít see every part of the system. I think this requires access from the columns themselves. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has accessed all of the moving parts this way.
Good luck!
