Hello All,

We would like to enlarge our sail inventory for this or the upcoming season. Now we have a new dacron main and the original dacron North Jib (2008). That's all.
We will be sailing on lake Balaton, where the most common wind speed is between 5 - 15 knots. Our plan is family cruising and club racing.

Unfortunately based on budget limit we have to rank our desires. What are the most valuable sails in your opinion?

I. I guess that an asymmetric spi is a must
II. Laminate jib or 105% genoa? (a genoa means -1 yardstick. Worth it?)
III. Code 0?

Have you ever tried a used sail? is it a good choice? Could you recommend any place to purchase used sales?

the 1 Point Yardstick is (in Germany) for overlapping Genoa (150%). The 320 can have max 107% and therewith no penalty because of that.

I would first go for 105% and a Code0 and maybe later than a Spinnaker. If you are going to race than maybe a Gennaker (Runner)

Thank you for your opinion!

I will ask the Hungarian yardstick committee regarding the 105-107% overlapping. I thought that any overlapping will cause one point minus.

Do you mean that a Genakker/runner (TWA 100-145) would be a better choice than an asymmetric spi (TWA 130-165)?

I had never heard of lake Balaton before and had to look it up. Please let us know more about it as you sail along. Don´t hesitate to post some pictures. I am excited.

I have bought two used asymetric spinnakers.  One was very light weight so only suitable for light winds.  It only lasted a season, and in retrospect it was not a good buy.  The second sail was 2nd hand but had never been used and has proved to be a great purchase.

Even with a spinnaker, it is difficult to find a sail of the correct size.  I wouldn't buy a used main or jib/Genoa unless it was designed forfor same boat AND RIG.

I think the combination of Spinnaker (Runner) and Code 0 is very good for performance cruising since you can really go downwind. However you will get a penalty of 1 Point (Yardstick) for this combination. For a Gennaker + Code 0 you don't get that penalty.
If you are mainly cruising (where the penalty is not relevant) and you like good Speed etc. and your are not afraid to handle a Spinnaker than go for that combination.

Balaton is beautiful you have to sail it Smile

There are a little fleet of Hanse 320, as I remember there are six in the YS list. Ours will be the 7th. Maybe you heard about Kékszalag or the Blue Ribbon Round. This is an international regatta at the Lake Balaton, which held in Hungary every year. The regatta starts and finishes in Balatonfüred, after the 200+km circumnavigation of the Lake Balaton. This is the oldest (the first was held in 1934) existing round a lake competition (Bol d’Or Mirabaud is since 1939, and Centomiglia is since 1951). The Blue Ribbon’s course is the longest among the main European round the lake events and nowadays has also the largest fleet competing (612 sailboats in 2009).

Thank you S&J,

this is very useful! If I buy a used sail I would like to buy one, which is produced for Hanse 320 (or 325?). I guess all have the same rig.

I am planning to race with the boat so I have to calculate with the penalty. If an upgrade worth it than no problem Smile
I've checked the YS list. Hanse 320's are 100 or 101 depending mainly on folding prop. All of them are using genakker 70-83 sqm.

In that wind range I'd choose a 130% genoa (it'll be indispensable up to 8 knts) and a spinny (symmetrical preferred) if you have the crew to handle it. You can additionally sheet the self tacker to sheet cars on side deck travelers for better sail shape control for higher wind strengths (when the genny would be too much).
