My goodness Paul, seems I'm really lucky Thumbs Up

Yesterday I was informed by polish Volvo Penta general distributor that was campaign on MDI modules last year. Of course nobody call me. I'm fighting to get replacement free of charge.

I'm electronics engineer and I still asking myself how they can design so fragile module. This is really not a "rocket science" IMHO.

best regards

Slawek

Hi, latest update on our MDI issues, I have picked up our new spare unit from Volvo as a warranty replacement for the unit they installed in January this year. This is another "P" series unit, does anyone know if these are the latest problem free ones, because the last one that went was a P series one?
All the best
Paul

Just as a point of interest, I just had the MDI black box replaced on my D2-75 on my Dehler under the Volvo Penta recall.

The part number of the replacement is 23195776 (the same as Paul in Singapore). Presumably, V-P wouldn't be replacing these in a recall if they didn't think they had fixed the underlying problem.

Hi Jeremy
The MDI that I got in January this year has that number and was initially got as a spare, but is now on the boat as the previous one failed. The replacement 'spare' unit is the one pictured above and is 22458451 so I am really not sure what I have got!.
Interestingly the other 415 in Singapore recently got a warranty replacement and that has the same number as yours.

We also hit the bad MDI box issue so I'm looking to install the same work around with a starter button, similar to what High Time did.

Does anyone know what size the bolts are on the side of the engine (the unused ones)?
We have a d1-30 engine on our H345.

Does anyone know how many amps at 12V the starter button for the work around of the MDI needs to be?

The steady state current requirement is quite low, probably less than 5A, but the inductive load of the solenoid means the on/off transitions can generate significant sparks which will burn the contacts. Given that the switch will only be used infrequently, I would suggest a 12V 20A push button switch (with a strong spring) would be OK. I wouldn't recommend a 5A switch.

Regarding bolt sizes, I can't remember what I used (I had them in my 'spare bolts' box). However, if you measure the diameter of the hole you will get a pretty good idea whether its 6 or 8mm (i.e. 10mm or 13mm spanner size). Looking at my photos again, I think they are probably 8mm (but I'm not certain!).

Happy new year to all.
I hate to add to this topic again, but we got to the boat today and found the MDI had blown again, the one that went was No. 23195776. I have replaced this with my spare one numbered 22458451
and all works fine again. But for how long?
I think this is the 7th unit to fail, but to be honest I am now losing track! I went into Volvo today and they are refusing to replace the broken unit as Volvo HQ say my engine number isn't part of their recall, which to me is ridiculous as the unit that failed was made in 2017 and has nothing to do with when the engine was made!
I would like to have a spare on board but am really reluctant to have to pay for yet another one, has anyone else had anymore joy with Volvo on this?
All the best
Paul

Several months after I caught up with the owner of Sun Oddessy a couple of berths over from who had apparently suffered a lightning strike, at around the same time my MDI and Tacho failed, which had vaporized his VHF antenna and written off all his electronics.  I also later discovered my blue tooth transmitter/receiver had failed.  This could well be the source that spiked the MDI.
