Hi Guys,
After recently sailing through some really heavy weather we noticed water under the mattress on the port side of the front bunk. Water not coming from above but probably from the bulkhead in front. Anyone ideas where to start. The anchor locker seems like a sealed unit !

Thanks for the quick response. Definitely not condensation, we have under mattress slats and its very wet only on one side , the opposite side to where my crew have been sleeping.

Again, I can recommend the search function: Advanced search->All Forums-> Any Date....... Some years ago I wrote about water in front of the bulkhead. Where the hull of the 370/400 is assembled with the deck, there have been reports of water ingress in heavy seas. In my boat, I discovered quite a lot of seawater in front of the bulkhead - 30-40 liters as I remember. It was right behind the bow, where you have to unscrew a plastic lid to get access. A mirror is needed to check if there is seawater in the bottom. The last few years the cavity has been dry, maybe because I haven´t sailed in gales and storms recently. Also my front hatch is starting to leak a little. I repaired the Sikaflex 15 years ago, but now it seems that I have to redo the job. Remember, that water ingress from e.g. the hatch or around the mast/swan-neck can travel unseen to a place several meters from the ingress.

The 45x has a sealed bulkhead between the large bowl locker and the main cabin. The only conduit that passed through are fit the water tank and I'm pretty sure that these are well sealed and, being well below the bed/mattress, would not cause the issue you describe.
All I can think of is that one of the overhead hatches may not have been fully sealed. One year I had a small rope caught between the seal and this caused some water ingress.

Is it only (and always) in heavy weather or does heavy rain have the same effect? Had you recently made any changes to the boat? Noting the environmental conditions in which it occurs can help you track down the cause.
I've had plenty of issues with water ingress and the only constant is that where it comes out might be a long way from where it got in! Known weak areas are the hull-deck join, the forehatch, the bolts through the jib track and the base of the swan-neck with the electrical cables. However, I wouldn't dismiss condensation as a cause if like on my H400 you have a fresh water tank underneath the bunk; I've sometimes had condensation despite the slats. If its just under the mattress then anything other than condensation would likely have left other evidence.
Recommend you take a hose and soak potential leak sites in turn. If you shine a flashlight at an oblique angle along the inside of the hull you might be able to see water tracks which might otherwise have escaped your notice. If you can identify the area then pulling individual bolts in turn and coating them with a suitable sealant might do the trick. Other suspected areas can be treated with a creeping crack cure like the 'Captain Curry's' brand. Good luck! |

Hi Guys,
Thank you so much for your help. I will start the search this weekend. As far as I can work out the water ingress comes only after real heavy weather sailing. Its like a puddle of water on the Port side which has soaked the mattress completely in that corner. I will report my findings later. Thanks again. Jon |

I have a 2008 370 with a similar leak, but on the Starboard side. After a great deal of searching, I finally determined that the leak was coming from the bow cleat bolts, and on y case the rear most bolt. Unfortunately it appeared these cleats are installed on the deck before the deck is placed on the boat, so access to the nuts under the deck I essentially nonexistent. I have not cut an access thru the cabin roof lining yesterday, but I have been able to stop the leak for now by caulking around the cleat using 3M 4200. You will have to be creative to get sealant behinds the cleat wher it is very close to the aluminum toe rail. So far my fix has held for about two years.

Hi Guys,
Just a quick update. Opened the port hole into the bulkhead only to find it was full of seawater up to the level of the berth hence it leaking into the bunk. Pumped it out and checked for ingress of water with hose. Nothing from the anchor locker of windlass, nothing when hosing all areas of the bow and cleats. Will go back with power washer in the hope to find where it might be coming in!! Doesn't look like a quick job!! |
