Hello all,
I recently was about to buy a lovely 342, 2007 model. When conducting the survey we found 40-50 osmosis blisters all over the starboard side of the hull, none on the port side. I was really shocked, as was everyone else, and pulled out of the sale. I thought I would share this info with you all, and I really enjoyed reading the posts here and getting some ideas about the boat I hoped I would soon own. Hope you donít experience this, but now you know it can happen.

And how did you found out it was osmosis?

The hull was inspected out of the water. The surveyor scraped all the paint off one small blister and then opened the blister which releases the liquid that is building up inside the fibreglass. An unmistakable vinegar/ acetone smell comes from that liquid.

It seems my post was a bit harsh? Well now it is gone in cyberspace.
Trolls are a rising problem in the cyberworld, some of you may have an opinion whether Trump was elected president because of russian interference on Facebook and other places. You may also have read of allegedly false recommendations of restaurants and hotels in Tripadvisor? The truth is hard to find.
If a brand new member of this forum is screaming "wolf" (osmosis), I do not like it, because no other person seems to have seen a wolf near a Hanse since a lonely wolf or dog appeared in 2004.

Members with a good memory may remember when a  big swedish boatyard had problems with wolves. The sale did not flourish after that, and second hand boats from this company did not sell very well.

Harsh was my post, but stepping on the toes of a Hanse-owner to be (or a troll) is a small price to pay.  We do not want our boats to be labelled as a dangerous buy, because one (1) voice is telling so.
Being a Hanse 400 owner for 13 years, I can tell that my boat does not bear this disease, and frankly I have not heard of any other Hanse boats in this period with any such problems

Your comments are disgusting and you should be appalled by your own behaviour. I have a genuine interest in Hanse boats, and in spite of my disappointment with the boat I mentioned, I am very open to Hanse in the future. Forums are supposed to be for mutual info sharing with people who share interests, which is what I did. And by the way I donít have a small penis because I am a woman. Shame on you.

Dear Alby, I apologize if I have offended you. You have 3 posts in this forum, two regarding a problem in a Hanse you were interested in buying, and an answer to my speculations that you were a troll.
The normal response to finding a serious problem with a boat, would be to ask some long-time owners if this was a general problem with this boat, or if it was a very rare occurence. (This you did not). Searching the net (which you seems not to have), shows one (1) case of alleged osmosis in the hull of a Hanse from 2004, which eventually was solved between Hanse Werft and the owner.

If you are really interested in the pro and cons of the Hanse, you may use the search function in this forum. Over the years you can find some rather new members calling wolf about this and that problem with a Hanse. Some of the members continue to discuss our common joy and despair in years after their first post. Others seemed satisfied with a few posts of gruntling, and then disappeared from this forum.

Captain Cook, I did not need to ask the forum whether this was a common problem because I already knew, from my research and conversations with shipwrights that it is not a common problem at all. I shared the information I found with this particular boat precisely because it was so surprising. My intention was not to stir up trouble but to state facts, hoping that this information is relevant and useful to owners.

Hi Alby,
sorry that you were met with such a harsh response on this forum. It is quite uncommon to read such rude postings on MyHanse, typical conversations are respectful and polite as far as I know. The only excuse for CC's blow-out is some re-occurring nagging like "Hanse rudders falling off", where one event caused by faulty third-party installation of autopilot is extended into a general warning about "rudders falling off".
By the way, as an owner on a 342 since 2005 I can really recommend this boat, both for the looks, the livability, and the performance. I would of course hate to discover osmosis, and I hope to avoid it due to the epoxy primer applied. I also keep my boat on the hard half of the year, partly due to reducing the risk of "the o-word".
Good luck in your search for a Hanse, you'll not regret if you buy a 342!

For what it's worth: A couple of years back when looking for a Hanse, I came across a 342 located in Northern Germany that was heavily attacked by osmosis.

I've had about 15 osmosis blisters on my rudder - which is not a big surprise due to the well known limited quality of the original type of rudder supplied by Hanse.
