Hi Guys,

I have to change the portlights sealings but I am not sure what type of portlights were installed. I think these are Lewmar standard portlights Size 1RE.

Am I right?

Tanks!

Here is four-page-thread about the cockpit portlight on my 342: https://www.myhanse.com/rubber-seal-around-portlight_topic7713.html.

If you skip to the last page you will see that I gave up on trying to put an new seal in an replaced the entire portlight instead.

Hello Johan,

Sorry for that, I really hope that I can manage the exchange of seal. Three from the four portlights are leaking it would be a buck of money to change them Shocked

Three out of four should not be leaking, especially considering that your boat must be younger that mine. Have you been in contact with Lewmar?

I am not suggesting that anyone should replace the entire portlight once the seal needs to be replaced. It is just that I gave in to the easy way out of the problem.

It is 11 years old. As I see the seal is not that flexible anymore.

When I had a problem with my seal parting from the frame on my last boat, Lewmar recommended silicone sealant (eg clear bathroom sealant) to fix the new seal. Was still going strong when I sold my boat 13 seasons later. I hadn't until then appreciated what a good adhesive silicone can be. I did get a little bit between the seal and portlight that I didn't clean up in time before it set, but because it was clear it didn't really show.

As I realized some drop of water are coming in between the seal and the portlight Acrylic. So I decided to change the seal. I find only one critical, but if I do the job I will change all seals.
It would be appreciated if you could recommend a good seal care something to avoid the changing Smile

Just like the rubber seal on the doors of your car, the portlights need some silicone to stay flexible. Once a year I clean the rubber with soap and white spirit, and then I treat it with silicone or PTFE, and my seals are now close to 14 years old.

Great advice!
I try to save the seal with this method, maybe I can bring back them into life!
Please describe me what is the white spirit?
