Just thought I would post the solution to our leaking tap as everyone loves a solution.#

First of all Google and You Tube are the font of all knowledge.

Typing in leaking mixer tap into either will bring forth a multitude of ideas and solutions.

The most popular one was that these mixer taps have a ceramic cartridge inside which appears to be the common cause of the problem.

In order to change it you need a cheap tool called a Strap Wrench which helps grip the chrome and release it without marking.

The cartridge (make sure you get the right size) has two holes for a normal mixer tap and three for one with a shower head. The size I needed was 35mm. You can buy these from a Plumbers Store, The internet or some marine suppliers. I got mine form Homebase for £8. I have seen prices from £5 to £45 for the same part. Same with taps £145 from a marine supplier £45 from a Plumbers Merchant.

Replacing the cartridge has cured the leak.

Another thought on the internet was to strip the existing cartridge and clean it as debris builds up over time.

The best news is that while looking at a possible cost of £2-300 the actual cost including the tool was less than £20 and for a Scotsman that is a good deal

Thanks for all the help.

Thanks Old Racer.
I'm looking at doing this on our boat where the tap leaks in our forward head. We have this set up
http://hanse.boatoon.com/en/spare-parts/sanitary-facilities/bathroom-interior/ausziehbare-duschbrause.html
Can anyone help me - Does the plastic chrome tap head screw off or pull off? Is there a hidden secret screw that i can't see ( despite unscrewing the unit from the wall and unscrewing the tap handle)? Standing on my head and taking my shins out on the lower door frame hasn't helped to access the golden ceramic cartridge 🤣 Would appreciate some help/advice!

As this is the second Hanse we have owned, with exactly the same leaky tap issue, I thought i’d share my findings as it seems a relatively simple solve once you have the right parts and know roughly what you’re doing. Taps located above the water pump on both boats leaked within their second year. As we are now live aboards, sponging up the drips was no longer cutting it for me.

Unscrew the mixer handle and remove
Pull off plastic metal cover
Unscrew screw holding white plastic thing to ceramic cartridge and remove
Unscrew (with your hand) the second plastic metal cover thing
Unscrew the black plastic fixing nut. This is the gremlin. No matter how nicely you coax this sucker out, it is going to warp and become useless. A socket won’t fit, so you’ll need plyers. This will become the cause of your leak.
Pull out ceramic cartridge.
With a boa strap wrench, remove plastic metal cylinder that housed the ceramic cartridge (about 2/3 length of a toilet roll). I covered the inside thread with plumbers tape then reattached, tightly. Note that at this point, you have not removed the plastic cover for the mixer/hose unit and the whole unit is still screwed into the wall.
Replace ceramic cartridge (35mm) as shown. No need for Reich part, just make sure it looks like mine.
Put in a decent rubber washer to pack out the install and so when your fixing nut goes back in it’s actually holding the ceramic cartridge tightly in place and stopping any water leaks. Mine was about 3-4mm thick.
Throw out that useless fixing nut and replace it with a decent nylon one or brass one that 1. you can actually tighten with a socket set and 2. has a decent thread on it. You can find them online if you persevere, 35mm ceramic cartridge fixing nut.
Reassemble. Mine sits slightly proud of the cylinder casing, but it’s tight. Any further in and my socket wouldn’t fit into the plastic cylinder casing to tighten further. Because of this, I couldn’t fit the metal plastic cover thing that has the hot cold symbol on it.

Parts cost about €10. Any further tips/advice/comments greatly welcomed.
