my dark blue 312 is fading "chalking" mostly aroud the bow end. has anybody had experience how to deal with this?
i tried car polish . looked very good- but only for 3 weeks. would special stuff like from 3M do a better job? or is polishing hopeless and repainting or even "wrapping " the only solution? I would appreciate hearing from anybody who found a solution? thank you!

All coloured gel coats have this issue eventually - called oxidization.

If the hull is fairly new (a few years old), then using an oxidization remover (rubbing compound) first followed by a good wax will restore it for a number of months. Eventually though, after a number of years, even that only lasts a month or two. Doing that on my 2007 looks good for about 1 month then I can start to see some chalking again and after 3 months it's looking sad once again. I recently talked with a fiberglass expert at a boat building/repair company. He said that at this point I should have the whole hull wet sanded starting with around 400 grit and then progressively down to 5000 and then the polish. This will restore it to new. When I have a few thousand dollars laying round I may have it done (I won't have the time to do it myself)

Here's the products I currently use
Polisher https://www.makita.ca/index2.php?event=tool&id=1905
Oxidization remover https://meguiars.ca/product/marinerv-heavy-duty-oxidation-remover/
wax https://www.westmarine.com/buy/meguiars---56-boat-rv-pure-wax--443226

Note, don't use the one step cleaner/wax. They don't protect that well.

For the removing the oxidization, use a good foam pad specifically for rubbing compounds (they are very firm). Alternatively, you can use a wool pad that is specifically for that purpose. The wool is a bit more aggressive.

Hi,

I gave up a few years ago trying to keep my dark blue hull glossy - the effort every year was not worth the couple of months it stayed good. The answer is to have it vinyl wrapped - choose your original colour or a new one. I've had minor damage caused by a burst fender scrape the vinyl but that was quickly and cheaply repaired.

This winter I will re-paint the faded blue hull of our 315 Pieterman. With good sanding and the use of the correct paint, I hope the result will be OK. We chose to stay with the lovely blue color. And we keep our fingers crossed...

I have a light blue hull 315 which someone punched a hole in last year - I the guy was good and paid for it. However, the original colour gel coat colour and the hull had a massive difference in colour. The only way they could get it to match was to sand it down the hull with 600 paper to get to the same colour as the repair and then use Aquabuff 2000 to finish off.  The other thing I noticed last year before the accident on the other side of the hull , was where I have a  2 metre cloth over the side to protect from fender rub, there was no UV damage to the hull under this cloth from the year previous polishing. So this year I'm going to make up some fender cloths that go most of the way along the hull.

Last winter (march 2018)  I had my white hull cleaned and polished by a shipyard

I thought she was a new boat

It's now december and the hull is as she was before although the hull as rinced after each cruise

This is not only a "coloured hull" problem

Update!

This week we sanded the hull of our 315 Pieterman. My son did most of the hard work. Some little holes were filled. Next week the hull needs a last sanding and cleaning. An then it is time to re-paint. I'm looking forward to this job.

Instead of the two white lines at the waterline, we will paint the antifouling a bit higher (to the bottom of the current thick line), then have one smalle blue line and above one broad line (to the top of the current small line). This broad line will continue to the very front of the bow so the port and starboard side become one.

It will not be Hanse-Hanse, but it will be to my liking. I'm looking forward to it.

 Thumbs Up

Wife & daughter are coming this time, but they refuse to come for the paulusfeesten so will arrive by train on the last day. They claim that they have "taste" in music. I am not sure that i agree, but we shall see. Looking forward to 3/4 weeks in Ostend. Just need Simon to find me a decent berth.

Where are keeping the boat to do this work? Are you in a building alongside the Visserijdok or have you moved the boat to Blankenberge?

Hi Pieterman,

Very interested in your painting project, could you please confirm what paint you have used.
It would appear that this has been hand painted not sprayed?
Any advice would be very welcome as my light blue hull is very sad looking

Regards

I had the same fading blue gel-coat color. I did everything to get the luster back. Finially I had my boat painted with Awlgrip in 2014. Without ANY polishing or cleaning it looks as good today as it did when it was freshly painted.

Hi Blaven,
these are the steps we followed to paint the hull:
- good sanding
- fill little holes with epoxy glue
- epoxy primer (the lighter grey you see on the previous pictures I posted in this thread)
- sanding (almost all of the primer was sanded - picture with the taped stripes)
- taping
- after that: a cycle of paint-sanding-taping (3 layers)
- before applying the last and fourth layer (next weekend) we will ground the boat to have the least static electricity and so avoid dust.

More pictures to come after the weekend.

Glad that i am not the boat that has to moor next to you. I bet you will  have eyes like daggers if it turns up with dirty fenders alongside your lovely new topsides.
I think that you will have to invest in lots of brand new 200mm round ones to keep everyone away from you.
Have you had words with Simon to make sure that the committee boat is kept well clear yet?????

Does anyone has an advice for fenders? Fender covers or not? The seasalt and the sand are very harmful for the (fresh-painted) hull, but they get into some covers...
@Samuel. With some luck 'Daydream Believer' moores next to Pieterman this summer. Smile

Pieter
I really hate boats coming alongside me with fender covers. I have had several with tiny bits of grit in the covers & they have left circular marks in my hull. I can imagine them doing lots of damge to your boat because of the sand that blows off the beach when you are not on board.
You only need one windy day  with a north wind. Your fenders will be covered in fine grit & the swell in the harbour will make your boat rock back & forth, leaving great gouges in a lovely paint job

As for mooring next to you- I am worried.Cry
The paulusfeesten starts 11 August so I want to arrive 8 August.(I am staying until 30 August)
Trouble is that the Dragons are there from the 02 - 11 August. That means there may not be room for me when I arrive.
Emily will almost certainly send me away if I arrive late at night.Cry
I have absolutely no desire to moor up near to the, "ladies of the night"  at the other marina, miles from the  RNSYC.  I need my lunchtime beer every day, It is what i look forward to.
Somehow, i will have to have words with Simon a week or so before & cry on his shoulder!!!!Wink

Conclusion: fender covers on salt water and sandy environment are not a good idea. OK.

But what are the good ideas to protect a fresh painted or polished hull when mooring alongside another boat or pontoon?

Thank you for the advice Frank. Looks nice these longfenders. Do you know the tissue these longfenders are made of? The problem in my home harbour is that salt and sand get soaked into the tissue and cause (micro)friction.

As far as I know these fenders have a strong Nylon outer side. It seems that any rainfall cleans them thoroughly. I have a pole fender from them and this one has Polyethylene foam inside.
But I have no clue what they have on the inside ( hull side ). Why don't you just drop an email to them and ask specifically about any interaction between the inner layer and your freshly painted hull.

Samuel, I plan to sail Pieterman to Ostend this weekend. Just like you - I suppose - we had very strong winds and heavy seas for the last two weeks. Now the weather is very fine, the marina is dredged, and I will be so glad to sail again after the winter.

By the way, is Great-Britain motoring away from the continent next week on march 29th? Ramsgate normally is 58 nautical miles from Ostend. Will it be more from now on? :-)

Just do not fill up with fuel when you get here, because there are some officials in Ostend who might get upset Cry

I reckon about 7 years and it still good, just needs a wash with soapy water now and again. Another positive is that it protects the hull from further uv.
