I have a gennaker (150m2) on my 445 with snuffer+sock. For single hand use I am thinking about a furler -- I would very much appreciate experienced recommendations about yes or no, which system (top down or not), which brand(Seldén GX-Furler? Bartels?  https://bartels.eu/en/" rel="nofollow - https://bartels.eu/en/  ) etc...
Many thanks!

Hi Alain,

I have a 80m2 on my 345 with a anti-torsion cable on a Bartels Furler. The System works perfectly, when you furl and unfurl the Gennie in light winds. So may recommendation is , odn't wait too long when winds are increasing. Be aware that the furled gennie is NOT strong wind proof. you either have to take it down or use a protectove cover. Gennies are always prone to sunlight degradation of the fabric.

Have a look into the electroc furler, although they come with a hefty price tag.
You need to furl/unfurl any time you want to tack.

Fair winds

Hi Frank

many thanks -- at what wind speed you roll it ? (my gennaker is OK up to 17 nots). From a dealer I got the recommendation to use Spinex 4.0V2R -- it has balls on the furling line to increase the furling speed (more diameter) and to protect the fabric.
thanks -- keep well  !

Hi Alain,

max. 10 - 12 knots true wind and then behind the main on a downwind course.
A second hand has to let the sheet go in order to furl by hand.
Wear gloves !

Stay healty

Hi Frank

What are the problems at more wind -- 15..20 knots -- behind the main sail?  (With the snuffer/sock it still works, but someone has to go to the mast to pull down the snuffer/sock which in waves can be challenging. An other solution could eventually be to have the line to pull up/down the snuffer/sock taken back to the cockpit.)

Alain, the problem is that at 15 knots the sail may start flapping wildly, when you loosen the sheet completely. So another person has to synchronize loosening the sheet with your furling action:
Too loose = wild flap = easy furl = lousy furled gennie
Too tight = minimal flap = very heavy furl = bad words = ok furled gennie

we have an ubi maior 150rw.  It’s great when you have limited crew.  It has a one way lock, so if your crew lets go, it won’t unfurl.

We have this mated to a future fibers torsion line

Thanks Chillios and Frank -- (I like fendant :-) -- to avoid all these problems of wild flapping or too hard furl I will test to use my good old snuffer -- but to bring the line to pull it down back to the cockpit so I can handle everything from there, adjust the autopilot, adjust the main sheet and pull down the snuffer + sock over the gennie...
Now that Greece opens its borders I will get back on to the boat end of next week -- I will test this solution -- and will then report about the result.
